Upcoming Marshal Roster

Thank you to those who volunteered to help (noted below in black) at the races to September. The remaining nominees (in blue) have been selected based on results from the previous summer race season and the period since they last helped at a race. Please advise your availability or unavailability to the race committee (race.committee@actvets.cc) as soon as possible.

I am also looking for more nominations to help in the ‘vacant’ positions at the Summer series races to the end of the year. Crit races at Stromlo Forest Park on Tuesdays will require a Race Director and one Marshal. Summer road races are on Sunday mornings.

RACE REPORTS:

Dalton Graded Scratch – 21st July

Saturday morning started out as a typical winter’s morning, cold and sunny and didn’t change much as the day went on. This was ideal start for a winter race day.

Out at Dalton the weather was much the same 8 to 9 degrees with a 10 to 15 knot wind.

The rolling hills of Dalton and beyond tested the 32 riders throughout the varying grades that had made the trip out.

The race was a couple of minutes late starting but as there were no A grade riders, this brought the field in line with the 1.30pm start time.

B had the largest field of 11 riders, C had 3 riders and D had 6 riders heading out to the first turn and back to the start continuing their second loop.

This meant the Sole rider in G grade could then be sent under way 40 minutes after the first field had left. E grade had 5 riders and finally F grade were the next to leave, with 6 riders in this group which also contained the only tandem for the race.

On returning and passing the start/finish line, the grades continued out on Dalton road to Rye Park but not knowing if I would see them again as the only Marshals that had ridden the course before were myself and Terry Moore who was out at the first turn. Listening with trepidation my spirit was lifted when Conan Liu radioed to say that B grade had reached him and were on there way back to town. In town it was up to Tony Rowley to send them out Bevendale road for the final leg where David McCook would send them back to the Finish.

B grade mostly came in as a group With Robert Langridge taking out line honors.

C grade was taken by Adam Potts.

D grade was a sprint finish taken by John Flannery followed by Steven Simms and in 3rd place was birthday boy Mark K Taylor who did ask to ride down a grade.

E grade was taken out by Allan Bontjer.

F grade had the power of the tandem taking line honors.

G grade could only have one winner this being Bernard Crowe.

The race went down without a hitch with only one local having a word about the larger group of B grade riders crossing the white line. If this could be avoided in the future this would be appreciated.

Thanks to the marshals out on the course and the lead car driven by Robin Mule and the tail car driven by Bryan Holloway.

Thanks as usual to our first aid officer Simon Whitehead who’s skills were not required on the day.

And as usual, Graham Hendrie for driving the van and arranging sign on/sign off, who was also lucky enough to get to race.

If there is anyone who I’ve missed in thanking or the results aren’t quite right, apologies.

Simon Milnes
Race Director
