From the Desk of the Handicapper

We had the first handicap of the season on Saturday resulting in the first win for E grade in ages. E grade only had three riders but they stuck together until the last time over Mt Tennant. Handicap riding is an art form not readily appreciated by some club members, and the lack of flat courses in the ACT surrounds makes it difficult to demonstrate that taking a steady approach and not destroying the bunch early is the best way to go about it. The view of some members is that all time gains can be made going uphill, but they then lose time by soft pedalling on the crest and then not driving it back down the other side. The Smith’s Road to the Apollo Rd turn course has a substantial hill but it also has xx kilometres where the bunch can work as team and push the pace by rotating with short turns. Surely it makes sense to make time gains during that flat part which accounts for about 70% of the time on the course and not the hills which only accounts for about 30%. Furthermore, pushing up the hills weakens the legs of the drivers who are going to push the pace on the flat sections resulting in a loss of whatever time was gained pushing hard up the hill. The other consequence is that riders drop off. The more riders taking turns will result in a faster average pace. The other aspect of the handicap is that it’s a team event. For the sake of the group, keeping it together should be a priority. Graded scratch races are the place for attacks, however, in the last quarter when groups are merging all bets are off and you can do what you like to savage a good result by sticking with a faster group or attacking your own group if you don’t like your chances in a bunch sprint.

I also noticed most riders sitting up high with hands on the hoods when doing turns. We perhaps don’t have the flexibility to have our backs parallel to the ground like a pro, but we can certainly reduce our frontal surface area by putting our hands on the drops or bending our elbows substantially while keeping the hands on the drops. Check out how the riders in a breakaway in the TDF swap turns and pay close attention at their position on the bike. There are some aspects of what they do that are perfectly applicable even to us oldies.

I’m looking forward to the next handicap.

RACE REPORT:

Tharwa Handicap – 26th June

Sat 26th June turned out to be fine and a bit chilly day for a race in the Tharwa region. We had a hardy 29 from 31 registrations with 2 withdrawals on the day.

Due to a mix up with map interpretation, [slight human error] we had a shortened course by couple of kilometers, but I didn’t hear any complaints.

First off F grade Chris Copeland [the lone ranger] at 26 minutes followed by a trio of E [echo merchants] six minutes after him; Then one of the bigger groups of seven.. D [delta] at 13 minutes.Following on at 17 minutes C [Charlie force] with a group of five;then the second biggest group of the day with seven speedsters was B [barnstormers] leaving at 21 minutes. Then at 23.30 minutes A2 [milk delivery] followed by another trio A[airforce one] off on scratch.

Checking the wind direction at the start there was the usual cross wind that seems to go with the territory.

On the return leg of the first lap Chris was still out on the front followed by E not far behind and still together.

The following groups of D..C. were still together and B losing a couple which were probably picked up by the milk run A2 followed by the fast and furious trio of A.[airforce one]

Last lap was a wait and see affair,no luxury of pictures from the helicopter to see how things were panning out.

As we watched over toward the Namadji area there was the sight of a group giving it some schtick coming off Mt Tennant. As they got within sight was surprised it was some E [echo] merchants leading the charge with a mix of D [delta].then coming in at some rapid pace some A and A2 and B graders.

Unfortunately I didn’t have the race numbers corresponding with the names on the start list,. I apologise for that.

I would like to thank the marshalls for their great work in setting up the signage and doing the turns Frank.,Michael,.Rob job well done..appreciation all round. And the extra help from Owain Kirsti and Alex.

Cheers,

Don de Smet

RACE REPORT:

Team Criterium – 19th May

Just to add some interest to our restricted race venues the committee decided to include a teams based criterium event in the calendar. The race was grade based with intermittent sprint prime points and super points for the bell lap. While the weather was cold and quite windy, the racing was hot and with the wind assisting the sprinters up the finish straight the marshals were well and truely kept on their toes. The teams were preselected by the club handicapper and aimed at keeping them as even as possible.

The prime sprint points were the same for all grades, with 4/2/1 for the intermediate primes and 10/6/4 for the final.

A grade had two teams of three and stayed together through the first sprint with Christophe Barberet first across the line, Heath Wade second and Jimmy Carroll just beating Paul Scherl for third across the line. The second sprint was taken out by Paul Scherl with Heath Wade second and Christophe Barberet just beating Jimmy Carroll for third.

In the third sprint Jimmy Carroll was first across the line, Paul Scherl second and Christophe Barberet just beat Heath Wade across the line. The fourth sprint was in the order of Paul Scherl, Jimmy Carroll and Christophe Barberet. The final sprint was taken out by Heath Wade, with Christophe Barberet second and Jimmy Carroll third.

In the end it was team Carroll, Wade and Goodfellow who took out the win by only 2 points.

A Grade Team 1 – 23 points
Christophe Barberet – (4/1/1/1/6) 13
Al Rait
Paul Scherl – (4/2/4) 10

A Grade Team 2 – 25 points
Jimmy Carroll – (1/4/2/4) 11
Heath Wade – (2/2/10) 14
Bruce Goodfellow

B grade also had two teams of three. In the first sprint Daniel Crocker was first over the line followed by Lance Purdon and Peter Young. After the first sprint, Daniel and Peter broke away from the main group and developed a large gap with Peter taking out the second sprint point, Daniel Second and Lance third. The gap held by Daniel and Peter was maintained through to the end of the race and they battled it out for first and second place at each sprint point. The final sprint was given to Peter, although this was a very tight finish with almost nothing between the two at the finish line.

Adam Strickland took third placing in the third sprint, fourth sprint and also the finish sprint.

B grade Team 1 – 21 points
Peter Young – (1/4/2/4/10) 21
Chris Nolan
Michael Hanbury

B Grade Team 2 – 29 points
Lance Purdon – (2/1) 3
Daniel Crocker – (4/2/4/2/6) 20
Adam Strickland – (1/1/4) 6

C grade had three teams and were a mixture of C and D grade riders. The racing was quite different, with the first prime pretty much setting the tone for the remainder of the race. Matt Hinchliffe was first over the line followed by Bruce McMillan then Ian Preston. After this it Matt pulled away and wasn’t to be challenged for the remainder of the race. Second place rivals Bruce McMillan and Ian Preston stayed together for the remainder of the race, battling it out for second place at every prime sprint and the finish. In doing this they distanced the rest of the field by half a lap at the end. It was reported that during the race was Bruce told Ian, “…not taking a turn, that’s my team mate in the break!”. Now there’s something that’s not often heard in Vet’s racing! While the teams were of mixed ability and breaking up early on in the race, every rider battled on against the wind to finish the race. Well done everyone!

C grade Team 1 – 38 points
Matt Hinchliffe – (4/4/4/4/10) 26
Bruce McMillan – (2/1/2/1/6) 12
Des Brown

C grade Team 2
Alan Bontjer
Tony Beasley
Ian McVay
Ross Robinson

C grade Team 3 – 10 points Terry Moore
Ian Preston – (1/2/1/2/4) 10
Ian Morton
Russell Marston

Thanks to Peter Zygadlo for sharing the race management and the report for A and B grades above. Thanks also to Russell Marston for helping with the setup and pulldown and assisting in adjudicating the place getters for the A and B grade sprint primes.

RACING THIS WEEK:

There are no events this week due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

RACE REPORT:

Sutton Driver Training, Graded Scratch – 5th June

On a clear 10-degree sunny day with a cold westerly wind making it feel much colder, 42 riders turned up to give the short sharp hills of the Sutton Driver Training Centre a go.

First off was C and D grade. C grade had 11 starters and all play nice and stayed together for the whole of race, it all can down to a bunch sprint finish with Steve Jones, who had sat comfortably on the back of the brunch the whole race, took out first place, followed by Lance Purdon and Adam Strickland. D grade also had 11 starters. They too stayed together most of the time though Robert Langridge did try a break off the front along the straight but was soon caught. The bunch spilt up on the final time down the long front straight with Michael Hanbury first, Robert Langridge second and John Stockman third.

Next was E and F grades, no G graders. Four E graders and two F graders started together, and one lap in Rosemary turned up a bit late to join the bunch. It was 3 laps in when the bunch started to break up, but it was not the F grades that were falling behind. The wind its toll those hanging off the back. Alison Hale showed that all her track training has paid off, winning the sprint followed by Chris Reis and Rosemary Robinson for E grade and Kevin Newhouse following close behind to get the F Grade win.

Last was the fast boys, A and B grade. Only four A graders started and seven B graders. The A graders also played nice starting together for half the race before a few breaks were tried, but ended in a sprint with Jimmy Carrol beating Paul Scherl with Daniel Lekhac getting third. C grade was the only grade to have a successful breakaway with Daniel Crocker and David Dickson working together to stay off the front for the whole race, though Christopher Short tried hard to catch them. In the end Daniel and David couldn’t decide who should get the win, but Daniel went over the line first. Daniel got second and Christopher got a valiant third.

Thanks all for a great race to watch. Thank you to Peter Harding for helping me, Simon the first aider, and Ian McVay for driving the van and bring the hot water urn so we could have a warm drink at the end the races.
