TRACK RACING REPORT- THURSDAY 01 FEBRUARY

Thursday 1 February was the fourth track session for 2024. It was a warm evening with a moderate
headwind in the back straight. Attendance improved over recent weeks with 9 riders, 3 in A grade and 6
in B grade. It was a fine competitive evening’s racing.
With only 3 riders, the 8-lap A grade scratch race provided little opportunity for tactics and was likely to
result in a final bunch sprint. The three riders started at an easy pace and shared turns on the front in an
orderly fashion. The pace varied up and down over the first five laps. On lap 6, Kerry Knowler put in an
attack. However, this was soon closed down by John Paul De Sousa and Craig Kentwell. The next lap
was a bit chaotic, as the final lap bell was rung prematurely. On the bell, John Paul and Craig surged
past Kerry to contest the sprint lap. It was a close contest with John Paul holding off Craig by a small
margin. To be sure of a result, both riders did an extra lap at pace. However, the result was taken from
the bell lap.
The 8 lap B grade scratch had 6 starters and was potentially a more interesting contest. The race was
fairly orderly up until lap 7. However, the pace was solid. Phil Coulton launched a suicidal attack at the
changeover on lap 7. The pack was soon strung out and hanging on at full pace. Phil made the race
interesting but could only sustain the attack for around 1 lap. At that point, the fast riders surged past,
sprinting into the bell lap. The sprint was a good contest. Hamish Anderson just got the better of Sarah
Stephens with Alison Hale a close third.
The evenings second event was the 1-lap standing start, time trial. Hamish Anderson and Sarah
Stephens are ones to watch for these short sprints. They did not disappoint. Hamish set the best time at
28.23s with Sarah just adrift at 28.50s. John Paul De Sousa was just a few hundredths slower with an
excellent time of 28.59s.
The next scheduled event was a 2-lap handicap. With the limited numbers, this race combined A and B
grade riders. It was another good, fast contest. Initially, Phil Coulton surged past the limit rider to lead
out the first lap. On the second lap, Phill was swamped by riders surging into the sprint lap. Hamish
Anderson set a blistering pace to hold out John Paul De Sousa for the win. James Newhouse was having
his first track session this season and managed a creditable third place.
The session’s final event was the usual Italian pursuit. The teams had 4 riders. Team 1 had a very
strong B grade contingent with Phil Coulton, James Newhouse and Sarah Stephens. This trio rode well
to eke out a 3m gain on Team 1 before the final lap. Team 2’s Hamish Anderson launched into the final
lap like a rocket, so it looked like a close finish was possible. However, Team 1’s John Paul De Sousa
just piled on the pressure leaving Hamish with an impossible task. It was a good win for Team1.
Major place getters were as follows:
8-Lap Scratch: (A grade) John Paul De Sousa, Craig Kentwell, Kerry Knowler (B grade) Hamish
Anderson, Sarah Stephens, Alison Hale.
1-Lap SS TT: (A Grade) John Paul De Sousa (28.59s), Craig Kentwell (30.83s), Kerry Knowler (31.07s)
(B Grade) Hamish Anderson (28.23s), Sarah Stephens (28.50s), James Newhouse (30.04s).
2-lap Handicap: Hamish Anderson, John Paul De Sousa, James Newhouse, Sarah Stephens, Craig
Kentwell.
Italian Pursuit: Winner Team 1 (John Paul De Sousa, James Newhouse, Sarah Stephens. Phil Coulton)
Season Point Score Update:
John Paul De Sousa (212), Conan Liu (207), Craig Kentwell (152), Graeme O’Neill (144), Alison Hale
(142), Hamish Anderson (121), Sarah Stephens (111), Steve Jones (93), Warwick Wilson (85), Kerry
Knowler (78), Wayne Benham (73), Martin Graham (72), Ed Garnett (70), Phil Coulton (69).

Road Race Report 04 February

Our first Road Race of the year and some good numbers in most grades was good to see. A Grade saw a few attacks go off the front during the 4.5 laps, but all appeared to be reeled in before a final group of 4 came to the finish line with Stuart Griffiths taking line honours ahead of Tristan Dimmock and Steve Crispin.

B Grade was a tough two-up battle between Craig Lindenmayer and Simon Costello. Both did well to push through the full distance together, with Craig taking the sprint finish.

Ed Logue – C-grade started with eleven riders on the line with another running late.

The first two laps saw the loss of a rider each lap, then Anthony Dick surged to the front on the third time up Lookout Hill which split the peloton.

A leading group of six – Dave Dickson, Emma Padovan, Daniel Ward, Ian Preston, David Buckley and Ed Logue formed a group on the descent to the Tharwa u-turn and stayed together until the fourth and final approach to Lookout Hill where Dan did a leadout for Emma, which Dave joined. Emma and Dave gapped the remaining four on the ascent to ride for the win and join B grade, with Dave too strong for Emma in a sprint while Ian Preston from the Cycle Co-op crew was third.

A special mention to Darren Blackhurst who was the late starter and rode a 46km individual time trial. Also nice to have Andrew Matz on the bike for his first race with the club in around 18 months.

Great to see a good turnout for several grades at an open road race.

D Grade was grouped with E and F for 3.5 laps of our short course. The majority were able to keep together, while a few stragglers battled on off the back. A Notable mention to Lindsay Graham (F Grade) for riding most of the race solo. Very inspiring! D Grade came to the line with a reduced bunch sprint where Bryan Holloway took it out followed by Kirsty Cummin and Rob Langridge. E Grade was won by Russell Marston who stuck with the D Grade riders until the bitter end. Linda Stals came in second in E.

A reminder to our faster grades to please warn fellow riders as you pass them out on course. Simply yell out as you approach. This is a safety concern as well as common courtesy.

David Parker – Race Director

From the President

At tonight’s Annual General Meeting all of the 2023 committee positions were spilled, and I nominated and received support to become the next President of CRMCC for 2024.

It’s important to recognise the outgoing President Kim Malcolm for leading us through the past couple of tough years, the outgoing Club Secretary Craig Tozer, and the outgoing Treasurer Kevin Woods.

I thank them for their enormous contributions over their respective years in the committee. We also recognised the contributions of Ian Morton, and inducted him as a Life Member of the club.

I am also pleased and relieved to be working again with David Parker (Vice President), Rob Langridge (Club handicapper), Chris Short (Race committee) and Ed Logue who has offered to take on The Bleat, and look after race results.

We welcomed new committee members Simon Costello (Treasurer), Damian Copeland (Secretary) and general committee members David Buckley and Brian Peak.

Please take a moment to recognise your new committee members should you see them, and thank them for stepping us as club volunteers to help keep club operations ticking over.

We are still looking for someone to take on the role of Membership officer, and we have a need to fill some gaps in the following areas of expertise:

  • Database, web and IT systems – someone who can liaise with a developer to improve functionality of RMS and email comms
  • ETC coordinator – someone who can coordinate signage, inventory, and interpret TMPs and provide advice to ETCs
  • Van coordinator – someone with experience in motor vehicles to work through various mechanical issues and liaise with service providers when needed

Our 2024 membership is 204 strong, with 3 officials, 21 female members, 180 male members, 1 non-binary. Since the start of 2024, we have inducted 12 new members, with many having come from taking out a trial membership first.

Over the next 12 months as your President while working with the committee, it is my intention to implement a 6 point plan:

•             Introduce direct communication with each of our diverse ‘cycling clans’, where each clan has a representative that attends quarterly meetings that are 30mins in length, that address upcoming race organisational issues. This opportunity allows us to get some regular reciprocal multilateral communication and engagement going with our core membership. I’ll be making contact with these clans soon. If you’re not a member of a ‘cycling clan’, we will also provide the same opportunity to independent and unattached racers.

•             Train and mentor these clan representatives in hope that they become actively engaged in the club, and which may prepare them for committee representation later down the line

•             Continue to offer flagship events in NSW, Gunning and working with known and unknown constraints

•             Implement efficiencies of scale such an annual criterium pass if cost effective, results management and recording, and review our comms plan and protocol with our membership

•             Look to see how we can incorporate the popular events on trend into our program, such as gravel participation rides, training rides for gran fondos, new criterium courses other than SFP and SDTC

•             Dedicated roles for results coordinator/management, Comms, and improved knowledge and management of database and results integration

We will also look to distribute the pulse survey results as soon as we have compiled them.
