Club contributions
I would like to acknowledge Andrew Remely’s contributions over the years in helping out the committee. In looking at the President’s inbox, I can see he’s been active in the evolution of the Bleat through various tools in the background like Mailchimp and now WordPress, and was critical in setting up our website over a decade ago. We have many members who are not committee members who go out of their way to help the club function in the background. Thank you to Al Bontjer who is looking after web hosting and our mail and web accounts. Thank you to Seymour who is stepping in to moderate our Facebook page when required.
Winter track training
We are offering 5x 1hr track sessions every Sunday afternoon fortnight, with the next one this Sun 21 July 2-3pm, and ending on 15 September. The goal of this training is to stimulate and reinvigorate our track program. Participants must be members or trial riders to register and pay $5 per session online https://rms.crmcc.org.au/calendar?5021615. We require a minimum of 2 riders to register to run these sessions. This is for track practice only, no racing, no moto-pacing.
We are also providing this opportunity for club members unacquainted with the art of fixed wheel riding, to come out and try track in the hope that you will join our Thurs afternoon racing program from October 2024. These track practice sessions will be staffed by knowledgeable ‘Club track wardens’, who will open up the velodrome for our booked timeslots, brief participants particularly novices about protocol and safety. Novices wishing to learn on one of the club’s donated track bikes should establish early contact with membership@crmcc.org.au so that we can fit you to the bike.
Note that the velodrome has a high bank and road bikes and street fixies are not appropriate for this venue. Please only bring your kids along as spectators if they are actively (not passively) supervised, due to the risk of serious injury with riders exiting and entering the velodrome gate.

Next road race
Our next road race is the Memorial Trophy Handicap at Lookout Hill from 1330 AEST on Saturday 27 July 2024.
We need a race director for the event to be run so if you can help the club in this role please contact race.committee@crmcc.org.au .
The course will be four laps starting at Lookout Hill with 3.5km to Tharwa, u-turn for 5km back towards Point Hut Crossing, u-turn for 1.5km to start/finish line for 10km each lap. It will have the classic Lookout Hill finish.
Trial riders are welcome to participate in the race but only financial club members are eligible for medals in this event.
Race registration cut-off is Friday 26th July at 9pm. Cost is $10.
You need to register by looking up the calendar entry in the RMS https://rms.crmcc.org.au/calendar?5019059
You must wear your CRMCC assigned race number to race.
Late registrations will be assessed by Race.committee@crmcc.org.au and if allowed, a late fee of $10 will be applied.
If you are unregistered and show up to the crit track, you must convince a committee member (not the Race Director) of your club member financial status for insurance purposes, before being allowed to participate.
Race report for round 4 of Sutton Super Series
On an excellent day for cycling with sunshine a light variable breeze 39 starters raced on the Sutton Driver Training course for round four of the Sutton Super Series. This was also the first time the new timing board has been used in a race and proved very effective. Certainly much easier to manage the race timing once a few little quirks had been sorted.
A and B grades were first off with 50 minutes plus 1 lap. Both grades stayed together and both with very consistent lap time from start to finish. A grade with 3 riders took regular turns to maintain a 3 minute 40 second lap time, shaving off 20 seconds for each of the final three laps. Stuart Griffith outsprinted Steve Crispin for second and Tristan Dimmock for a close third. By comparison B grade with a group of 9 averaged between 4 minutes and 4 min 10 seconds per lap. A number of attacks were neutralised mid race however the constant pace saw several riders dropped in the last two laps as legs were burnt in the chases. Chris Filiatrault did well to return from behind to the bunch with a 5th place. In a tight finish of six riders Greg Harris proved too quick for Michael Rowland and Marc Vroomans pipped Mick Rose for third, with Christophe Barberet rounding out the top six while a gap had opened up to Simon Costello and further back to David Parker and Paul Connor deciding to bow out gracefully with a DNF.
C and D grades then started for 40 minutes plus 1. There were a lot more splits in both these grades with once again a high pace set by the leaders. C grade with 11 riders started with lap times in the order of 4 min 10 seconds, winding up to 3 min 40 for the final lap. By the fourth lap riders were being shelled with Mick Hanbury finding the pace relentless and eventually after chasing hard had a DNF. The top four riders stuck together with Bradley Knowles.
D Grade started with the most numbers on the day with 12 riders. Attacks especially around the back of the course took their toll dropping riders early on with a strong group keeping up lap times around 4 min 30. While not as tight a sprint as C grade there was some competition for the top spot. Simon Porombka had a clear lead followed by Warwick Wilson in second and Greg Mitchell in third.
E grade set of with 5 riders plus Chris Copeland from F grade for a course of 30 mins plus 1. Once again there were casualties early on with the steady pace being set at the front. Chris Copeland and Anthony Fenech stayed together for a while with Chris eventually pulling ahead, while David Gunther stayed with the leading three until the second last lap before a gap opened up. Russell Marston with a light tailwind on the straight outsprinted Jonathon Chowns and Robert Langridge rounded out the top three.
Many thanks to Matt Sainsbery for first aid (once again we are very pleased not to be required to perform his duties), Poupee Lam for marshal, Paul Connor for driving the van, and David parker for organising the new timing board and set up.
Bob Miller, Race Director.
