WINTER TRACK TRAINING SESSIONS FOR NOVICES AND EXPERIENCED RIDERS

We are offering 2x 1hr track sessions every Sunday afternoon fortnight, with the next one on Sun 1 September 2-3pm, and ending on 15 September. The goal of this training is to stimulate and reinvigorate our track program. Participants must be members or trial riders to register and pay $5 per session online https://rms.crmcc.org.au/calendar?5021616 . We require a minimum of 2 riders to register to run these sessions. This is for track practice only, no racing, no moto-pacing.

We are also providing this opportunity for club members unacquainted with the art of fixed wheel riding, to come out and try track in the hope that you will join our Thurs afternoon racing program from October 2024. These track practice sessions will be staffed by knowledgeable ‘Club track wardens’, who will open up the velodrome for our booked timeslots, brief participants particularly novices about protocol and safety. Novices wishing to learn on one of the club’s donated track bikes should establish early contact with membership@crmcc.org.au so that we can fit you to the bike.

Note that the velodrome has a high bank and road bikes and street fixies are not appropriate for this venue. Please only bring your kids along as spectators if they are actively (not passively) supervised, due to the risk of serious injury with riders exiting and entering the velodrome gate.

Handicapper’s musings

Anyone for bike wrenching?

TLDR: Hughes has a community bike shed. Club members are welcome to come along to learn about (or teach me) about bike restoration and general maintenance. Work on the bikes here or bring your own.

The Hughes Community Shed in Hughes has a bike shed vaguely connected to the Recyclery. Here, we fix or revamp bikes that been donated by locals or found on nature strips. We then resell these and the money received goes to buying tools and parts, so that we can continue. Space is available for several people to work in the shed. Volunteers could help fix the donated bikes, bring their own machine for fixing or restoring or come for a chat. My bike knowledge doesn’t extend to suspension systems, electronic shifting, tubeless tyres or hydraulic disc brakes, but if you need help with ball bearings, quill stems, external cables, rim brakes and rust, I may be able to assist.

We are open on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays from 1000 on the corner of Groom and Whittle streets in Hughes. For insurance purposes, regular visitors will need to shell out $60 annually to be a shed member.

Email hughesbikeshed@gmail.com with your questions or to confirm opening times.
