ACT Vets – Smoke Policy

Vets,

The ACT Health Website has been updated (apparently in response to public feedback) to show the hourly PM2.5 readings as well as the 24 hour rolling average. The Air Quality policy has been updated;

Air Quality

Where the hourly PM2.5 readings from the Civic Air Quality Station as listed on the ACT Government Health Website: https://www.health.act.gov.au/about-our-health-system/population-health/environmental-monitoring/monitoring-and-regulating-air-7 (grey bars), shows the level exceeding 40 ug/m3 or trending upwards and likely to exceed this level during racing, the Race Committee will cancel the event. This is classified as a level of Unhealthy for All and it is recommended that everyone should reduce prolonged or heavy physical activity.

Where the PM2.5 rating is between 26 ug/m3 and 40 ug/m3, racing will proceed but members who are in Sensitive Groups should refrain from racing. The ACT Government defines Sensitive Groups as those over 65, pregnant women and those with existing heart or lung conditions.

Members, particularly those in Sensitive Groups, should make their own decision about on whether they feel it is safe for them to ride.

For Tuesday night Crit racing and Wednesday night Track Racing, the Race Committee will make a determination by 2:00pm and advise members by The Bleat, Twitter, Facebook and the RMS. For Sunday morning Road Racing, the Race Committee will issue advice on Saturday evening.

Members should be aware that if conditions deteriorate during the race the Race Referee may cancel the event.

The Committee appreciates the frustration at the disruption that this is causing to the racing program however our foremost concern is for the health and wellbeing of members.

Registration Renewal for 2020

2020 membership renewals are now due to ensure that you are covered by insurance for 2020. To renew, go to https://memberdesq.sportstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&OrgID=10244 or follow the prompts via our website www.actvets.cc. Click on the Login link and enter your username and password from last year. If you have forgotten your username and/or password, go to the tab at the top right hand side of the screen and click on ‘Username & Password’ – then enter your email address as requested in the box that will appear. SportsTG will then forward you the information.

Before each race, a check has to be done of all those registered to race to ensure they are financial members and covered by insurance. As a courtesy to those committee members who work hard to ensure the club complies with the terms of our insurance cover and also produce the race results, please renew your membership at least 2 days prior to racing. Membership costs are:
– A full competitive membership for 2020 is $125
– Non-competitive membership for 2020 is $5

Upon renewal, your 2020 license will be emailed to you direct from SportsTG. Please print out a copy and it is suggested that you laminate it or place it in plastic for future reference during the year ahead. You will need to show this license if you enter events run by other Veteran Cycling Clubs or the AVCC.

Please ensure that your personal particulars are always kept up to date, in particular your emergency contact details. For those members with First Aid qualifications please also update the site. It is a member’s responsibility to keep these details updated via the SportsTG website.

Club members are expected to contribute to the running of the club and its events as specified in the Race Officiation Obligations.

Event Traffic Controller’s Course – 15 February 2020

An Event Traffic Controllers (ETC) Course will be held on Saturday 15 February 2020 from 09:30-16:30. The venue for the course is the Office of Regulatory Services (TCCS Depot), 255 Canberra Ave, Fyshwick, ACT 2609. Enter to the Training Room is via Lithgow and Wiluna Streets.

An ETC qualification is required in order to be able to marshal at Club events in the ACT in any role requiring the stopping of traffic. We rely on a healthy stock of ETCs in order to be able to run road races in the ACT. The Club offers reimbursement to ETCs for their service at races, which is a nice way to subsidise your future race fees. The Club has negotiated with the ACT Government to provide the ETC course at no charge to the Club or members! It is completely free! There is also a live mentoring component which you can do at one of our ACT road races.

So, please, if you are not already an ETC, sign up for the course.

Members who already have an ETC qualification do not need to undertake the course again.

If you can attend, please contact Blended Learning International (our training partner), CEO Lisa Materano on Mobile: +61 438 134 558; or e-mail: lmaterano@blendedlearning.edu.au. Copy the Race Committee (race.committee@actvets.cc) on the e-mail so we can keep track of which of our members have enrolled.

Felicity Bright, a PhD Candidate in Environmental Physiology at the University of Canberra Research Institute for Sport and Exercise (UCRISE) is currently looking for male cyclists to participate in performance and physiology research that is being conducted at UCRISE. The study investigates the influence of varying relative humidity levels (ranging from dry to humid environments) on cycling time trial performance and thermophysiology responses (the regulation of core body temperature and physiological processes).

The details for who she’s recruiting are as follows;

  • Male cyclists aged 18-55
  • Cycle at least 250 km/ week
  • Reach 5 W/Kg on an incremental exercise test

Upcoming Race Officials Roster

Rostered race officials are shown against each race in the Race Calendar http://rms.actvets.cc/calendar.

If your name is followed by TBC (To Be Confirmed) you need to contact the race committee as soon as possible to either confirm your attendance or to request a swap.

Empty race directors and marshal positions are denoted as Vacant. Some marshals for races in the ACT need to be Events Traffic Controllers (ETC) and appear as Vacant ETC.

Please review the vacancies for upcoming races and email the race committee with events you would like to help out at, rather than wait and be asked to help at a race you wanted to do.

Races cannot happen without members contributing to make them happen.

RACE REPORTS:

Crit Racing – 7th January

The first crit since Christmas saw small fields of die-hards prepared to hazard smoke, heat and kangaroos in all grades.

B and D grades were up first with many, sensible, calls of “Kangaroos ahead” from both grades.

In B grade Michael Fawke made an early break, with Darren Blackhurst responding and reeling him after 20 minutes. Within the bunch places were swapped frequently as slowing for and taking off from kangaroos on the track dictated tactics. The race finally went a sprint finish between to Tony Rowley, Ed Logue and Simon Porombka.

D grade tactics were similarly dictated by frequent kangaroo crossings at both ends of the track. The ensuing race was prudently(?) slightly slower than usual. Line honours went to Kevin Newhouse, with Greg Mitchell second and Ian Morton third. Kudos to both B and D grades in respecting passing rules and matching pace to potentially dangerous conditions.

E/F and G grades manged 6 riders between them. This very quickly broke into two groups of three, then a three, two, one formation. The leading group of E graders Dave Gunther, Penelope Anderson and Leeanne Tennant got away early, worked together and finished in that order. F grade honours went to Chris Copeland and Ron Parker.

A grade’s race began with a break from the start by Seymour Saville-Boss, who was a full half lap off the front when a small kangaroo emerged from behind a bush at the turn into the finish straight. With no time to react several riders went down and the race was halted. Thankfully there were no serious injuries for Sports Medicicne’s Simon to deal with. The A and C grade races were subsequently abandoned due to the ongoing presence of kangaroos.

Many thanks to Liam as Marshall, Simon of Sports Medicine and especially to Seymour Saville Boss whose early kangaroo wrangling efforts contributed to safe races.
