ROAD RACE AT DAIRY FLAT ROAD, FYSHWICK – SUNDAY, 18 FEBRUARY 09.00 AM

Our next road race will be a criterium road race on Sunday 18th February at Dairy Flat Road.

We require two marshals for the event to go ahead.

Format: (criterium grades)

0900 A/B   50 mins plus 1 lap

1000 C/D   40 mins plus 1 lap

1050 E/F/G 30 mins plus 1 lap

There will be a sprint every second lap where points will be 3, 2 and 1. Double points for the final sprint – 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.

So those members who enjoy a longer spin on a Sunday – take an extended ride to Dairy Flat Road, have an intense block via the race, then add a bit more endurance to round your ride ;).

Working Bee–PARTICIPATION WILL COUNT AS MARSHALLING

An amount of ‘landscaping and tidying’ is required to race on the Dairy Flat course on Dairy Road this Sunday. This time around, some sweeping and much tree trimming is required. Those who help out will receive 10 competition points and it will count as marshalling. Please bring tree loppers or secateurs, leaf blowers, bow saws and stiff brooms. The 1400 start is to ensure members have recovered from their morning rides, but have time to prepare for the Latin Carnivale starting at the Multicultural Festival at 1830.

Time: 1400

Date: 17 February 2024

Place: Gate at the end of Dairy Road, next to Jerrabomberra Wetlands car park.

Bring: Hat, sunscreen, water and garden tools if you have them.

Duration: Between one and two hours depending on number of volunteers (shorter than any race marshalling)

TRACK RACING REPORT- THURSDAY 08 FEBRUARY

Thursday 8 February was the fifth track session for 2024.  It was a warm evening with a brisk wind that seemed to change directions over the race session.  Attendance held up with 9 riders, 3 in A grade and 6 in B grade.  It was a fine competitive evening’s racing.

With only 3 riders, the 8-lap A grade scratch race provided little opportunity for a break.  However, Kerry Knowler almost pulled off a big surprise.  The three riders started at an easy pace and shared turns on the front in an orderly fashion.  The pace increased over the first five laps.  On lap 6, Kerry Knowler put in a massive attack.  John Paul De Sousa and Conan Liu chose not to pursue and before long Kerry had a huge lead.  At this stage the lap count seemed to go astray, so Kerry was faced with holding out for three laps instead of the expected two.  She did well for the first two, but the pursuing pair got serious on the penultimate lap and quickly started to close the gap.  The bell lap saw Conan and John Paul surge past Kerry.  Conan held a terrific pace to take the win from John Paul with Kerry third.

The 8 lap B grade scratch had 6 starters and was fairly orderly with riders taking one lap turns on the front up until lap 7.  On lap 7 the bunch became a bit chaotic with riders jockeying for position to set up for a long sprint.  The pace soon accelerated with Alison Hale, Sarah Stephens and Hamish Anderson contesting the final sprint to the line.  Alison had the legs to overcome Sarah in second place and Hamish third.

The next scheduled event was a 2-lap handicap.  With the limited numbers, this race combined A and B grade riders.  The handicaps had been fine-tuned from the last 2-lap handicap with several adjustments.  Graeme O’Neill and Phil Coulton led out with an extra 1 second start.  Phil soon passed Graeme who clung on a few metres back.  At around 1.3 laps, the faster riders started to surge past the leading pair.  Hamish Anderson was irrepressible and took the win by a small margin over Sarah Stephens and a fast-closing John Paul De Sousa.  Graeme O’Neill and Phil Coulton were happy to hang on for fourth and fifth.

The sessions next events were graded 6-lap win ‘n out races.  These contests had a sprint every second lap.  The sprint one winner won the event and dropped out.  The sprint 2 winner was second and then dropped out.  The final sprint determined places 3 – 5 for points allocation purposes.

Hamish Anderson was prevailed upon to make up the numbers in A grade.  Hamish was happy to oblige knowing that his current form in short sprints is impressive.  In the event, Hamish took a flier on lap 1 and was untouchable.  The bunch quickly resigned themselves to contesting the second and third sprints.  For the second sprint, Conan Liu attacked early and soon surged over the line for a comfortable second.  Kerry Knowler could see the writing on the wall and launched early for the third sprint to take third place.

For B grade, the event was confirmation of Sarah Stephens good form in short sprints.  Sarah attacked early to take the first sprint and win.  Alison Hale overcame James Newhouse for the second sprint and James held on to take the final sprint.

The session’s final event was the usual Italian pursuit.  The teams had 4 riders.  Team 2 had a good start with Phil Coulton leading out and the Alison Hale building on Phil’s slight lead.  At the third changeover, Hamish Anderson blasted around the track to increase Team 1’s lead significantly.  John Paul De Sousa had an easy time holding out Conan Liu on the final lap.  The easy win may have prompted a premature celebration from John Paul as he confidently crossed the finish line with a professional roadies salute.  Big mistake for a track rider!  The very experienced Steve Jones was directing this race and instantly disqualified Team 1 for John Paul taking a hand from the bars during the race.  To quote Steve ‘better to learn this lesson in a club race than to be defaulted in an important event’.  Team 1 was happy to accept the unexpected reversal.

Major place getters were as follows:

8-Lap Scratch:  (A grade) Conan Liu, John Paul De Sousa, Kerry Knowler  (B grade)  Alison Hale, Sarah Stephens, Hamish Anderson..

2-lap Handicap:  Hamish Anderson, Sarah Stephens, John Paul De Sousa, Graeme O’Neill, Phil Coulton.

6-Lap Win ‘n Out:  (A Grade) Hamish Anderson, Conan Liu, Kerry Knowler  (B Grade)  Sarah Stephens, Alison Hale, James Newhouse.

Italian Pursuit:  Team 1 Winner by default (Conan Liu, James Newhouse, Sarah Stephens, Graeme O’Neill)

Season Point Score Update:

John Paul De Sousa (231), Conan Liu (227), Alison Hale (159), Graeme O’Neill (157), Craig Kentwell (152), Hamish Anderson (142), Sarah Stephens (134), Steve Jones (93), Kerry Knowler (92), Warwick Wilson (85), Phil Coulton (81), Wayne Benham (73), Martin Graham (72), Ed Garnett (70).

From the President

The morning temperatures have dropped already, and this can mean only one thing.

Club criterium championships for your age group are only 4 races away!

We had 38 riders at the opening road race at Lookout Hill on Sun 4 February and that was encouraging.

Thanks to our Race Committee, we have published our 17 events for the rest of the calendar year. This requires a lot of background work and coordination and we call about on our membership to volunteer for positions (Race Directors, marshals, van drivers, traffic controllers) to help run these events. In previous seasons, we’ve had to rustle up a roster looking at those who seldom come forward, to make it equitable for other members. Please help by contributing to the club positively. Next up in our calendar is the hot dog Dairy Flt course, a course that had been meticulously pruned and swept by artisanal course-setters. This year’s El Nino rain has meant that there is a lot of overgrown bushes which will require more effort to keep it in check so please lend a hand if you can to tidy it up the course before racing on it. [Please note the details above for a clean up at Dairy Flat Road this Saturday]

The Committee is still looking for a Membership officer to induct new members, and a database/software coder who might be able to learn the dark art of RMS system management and backend operations.

Please be mindful that as the race registration deadline approaches, that things don’t automatically just happen, and there are often a series of manual steps that occur before one’s race entry is included. Our response time is delayed during the working day. Here are your contacts about various common issues:
