RACING REPORTS

Stromlo Forest Park crit Tuesday 2 April

Thanks to the CRMCC committee and volunteers for putting on a great season of racing, and thanks to Ian, Ed, Simon, and Paul for helping on the night. Similarly, thank you to all of the club members who have volunteered over the course of the season to keep us all racing.

Before I get to the report I’d like to include a quick reminder that in community sport we all have an obligation to volunteer and contribute to our club. It’s a case of we as members having to look after and do things to support our club, rather than the club supporting us.

I know everyone is busy and has commitments, but each member has an obligation to make time for the club at least once a year and help in some way. Ask yourself what have you done recently? Have you volunteered this year? If not, why not?

Don’t be the member who always sits in the wheels benefiting from the efforts of your mates. Hit the front and do your turn in the wind at least once a year.

For those who haven’t volunteered recently, there are still 12 race director roles to be filled on RMS, plus lots of marshal roles. Email the committee and tell them which one you’re going to help out at.

Race Report

Clear skies and cool conditions set the scene for the last round of the season. The last vestiges of a stiff westerly gusting in at 33 km/h from the Brindies signalling that racing would be tough, and the first signs of winter were approaching. With shorter race times for all grades, racing was going to be hard, fast and punchy.

A grade started in curious circumstances, with absent club president Conan L (on holidays in the US) mysteriously appearing on the start list. Steve Crispin led out proceedings by driving the pace, with James Thorp, Marc Vroomans and A grade debutant Krusty Bryant all hitting the wind and putting in the hurt. The attacks came thick and fast, with Stuart Griffiths’ attack the first to stick. With nearly half the race down Stu had eked out a 7 second lead over the chasing group, with James, Tristan Dimmock, Toby McLenaghan, and Andrew Murrell all contributing to bring him back. With 9 minutes to go the chasers had secured their quarry, the group back together. A series of attacks from Steve, James, and Stu saw the bunch start to break up with the first riders splitting off the back as the elastic stretched then snapped. As the dust settled Stu and James had established what would be the winning move of the night, with Steve spearheading the poursuivants behind. In the final Stu outsprinted James for the win, Steve in third.

Needing no invitation Mark Terracini, Simon Prombka, and Lance Purdon set the tone for some of the toughest racing of the night, establishing a break in the opening laps of C grade and breaking up the bunch in the process. Mick Hanbury valiantly tried to bridge to the lead three, but the pace was too hot and he soon retreated to the relative safety of the reduced group of chasers behind. With 13 minutes left on the clock, the lead group of Mark, Simon, and Lance were looking like they could make the break stick. Strong riding from the chasers, including Mick, Matt and Myles Trew saw the break reeled back in over the following few laps. With four minutes to go Mark attacked again for what would prove to be the winning move. Matt and Myles drove the pace for the chasing group behind, but in the end Mark proved too strong managing to hold on long enough to keep clear air between his wheel and the fast closing bunch sprint for second place, Lance proving too strong for Simon to round out the podium.

Having had a chance to watch the earlier grades split apart, it seemed an agreement had been reached and B grade started without a flurry of early attacks. The bunch remained together for the first several laps, with Chris Williams, Gavin Stephens, and Craig Lindemayer all keeping the pace steady but fast enough to dissuade any would-be opportunists from escaping up the road. With 12 to go on the clock, Craig decided enough was enough and made what would be the only attempt at a breakaway for the evening. Keeping Craig on a short leash, Chris, Seymour Savell-Boss, and Darren Blackhurst got to work and caught him on the back straight within a lap and a half. The pace of the race stayed high for the remainder, Darren and Mick Rose keeping any further attacks in check. In the final Mick bettered Craig and John Brotherton.

With seemingly no such agreement in place, D grade rolled away to start what would become a blood bath, riders being unceremoniously spat out the back within the first few laps. Driving the pace early, tandem duo John Barlow and Ben Healy set the tone and a brutally fast pace for the first two laps. Ian Moreton had similar ideas and half a lap later was drilling it on the front, jettisoning riders off the back in the process. The attacks continued, with the tandem duo, Vanessa Judge, Russell Marston, and Jonathan Chowns all inflicting damage, and in the process splintering the race to pieces. With 2 laps to go John and Ben shouldered the role of bunch leadout train with everyone else lining up behind. In the closest finish of the night Russell proved too strong for Vanessa, Kevin Newhouse in third.

A group of three riders from E grade saw the close to our season of racing. Rico Fitch, Mick Donaldson, and Chris Copeland rolling turns and demonstrating tactical riding at its best. With the breeze and light fading, and the ducks and roos staking their claim on the course for the evening, the three riders circulated looking for the right moment to attack. This came with nine minutes on the clock, with Rico accelerating and establishing a small lead over the two riders behind. Chris and Mick weren’t going to let line honours ride off down the road unchecked, and within a lap had brought Rico back into the fold. Successfully navigating a pitch invasion from a large waddle of ducks, and with one lap to go, Rico wasn’t done yet and attacked again on the back straight to gap the chasing Chris and Mick, finishing in that order.

HANDICAPPER’S MUSINGS

Sutton Super Series II Kicks off this Saturday!

This Saturday marks the beginning of Sutton Road Training Centre Super Series II. Six races will be held over the winter season at the Sutton Road Training Centre with riders accumulating the points gained for each race as per the list below:

1st 10 points

2nd 8 points

3rd 6 points

4th 4 points

5th 3 points

6th+ 2 points

This scoring system differs from the RMS. 10 points will still be awarded to the winner even if only two start the race.

Riders with the most points accumulated at the end of the series will be crowned grand champions for their grade.

Here are the main rules:

  1. The final round will be worth double points and riders that participate in all races will get a bonus 12 points.
  2. Prizes such as gift vouchers will be presented after the final race for first, second and third places.
  3. Riders must compete in the final race to receive a prize and be present at the prize ceremony.
  4. Riders who are promoted will take half their points with them to the higher grade.
  5. Point scores will be kept for each grade and updated after each round.
  6. If more than one rider finishes with the same final score, a count-back of the overall results will determine the higher place getter.
  7. The races may not all be scratch races, with a points race as another option.

Riders intending to compete in the series should make themselves familiar with all the rules.  Any feedback will be welcome prior to the first race but it won’t be possible to make changes to the format after that.
