Vale Peter James Black 11 January 1942 – 20 August 2022
‘He loved his cycling, and in retirement would ride at least six days per week‘ was how former member Doug Widdup summed up Peter’s passion for cycling. Peter raced with the club from 2002 to 2011, competing in 79 events in E and F grades. His best performance was winning an E grade scratch race at Uriarra Homestead in 2008, where we had a staggering 99 competitors. He also rode in France and Italy on tours on a number of occasions.
From John Hall: “Blackie”, as Peter was affectionately known, was a competitive rider and loved a contest. He also loved telling yarns at the end of the ride, and in social settings, and many of us had heard his same yarns several times over! He was a devoted family man and gave of his time and affection to his three kids and their families.
His day job was a GP in Belconnen, and he was highly experienced and regarded in the Canberra community. He had a focus on obstetrics in his practice.
Peter was mainly a road cyclist but also a recreational MTB rider, particularly at the coast where he loved to spend time.
He was a member of a number of ongoing riding groups including Eros Esra (EE, Sore Arse spelt backwards) which was founded by Bob McDonald, Ben Hall and John Sweetapple in the mid-80s. EE would do annual country tours in NSW and Victoria with other participants including Mark Stevenson, Mark Taylor and Howard Galloway. Peter also rode in a regular Thursday group with Doug as well as Scott French.
The funeral service for Peter will be held in St Thomas Mores Catholic Church, Campbell, on Wednesday 31 August at 11am.
The Capital Region Cycling Club extends its deepest condolences to Peter’s family and friends and mourns the loss of one of its former members.

Reminder: All riders must register on the CRMCC Web site (https://rms.actvets.cc/calendar) by 2/9/2022 6:00 PM prior to the race. There is no registration at the event.
Late entries may be accepted in exceptional circumstances. All late entries must be lodged with the Race Committee race.committee@actvets.com.au, not through the Race Director on the day.
Any requests for Grade changes should be sorted out with the Handicapper prior to registration.
Where: Drive aprox 2.5km north west on Uriarra Rd from the intersection with Opperman Ave (the main entrance to SFP).
When: 1:30 pm.
Race Description:
Iron Mike Classic Race
Race start and finish on Uriarra Road at SFP western car park. Race goes past the homestead to end of bitumen and return.
NOTE: riders are NOT to attack on the descents onto Uriarra crossing on either the outward or return legs.

RACE REPORT:
Mtn Creek Rd, Club Championship – 27th August
The CRMCC Road Race Club Championships were staged on the beautiful Mountain Creek Road at Fairlight, on a 10k out and back course in spectacular spring-like conditions… however unfortunately, our trusting partners the ‘traffic controllers’ showed up on-time at the Old Federal Highway course!
With this in mind I want to say a massive thanks to all participants and volunteers, for your patience and flexibility in an otherwise frustrating moment, because with some tweaks to the program we had a fantastic day of competition and community. This typifies what I love about this club.
So with racing start delayed almost 1 hr, we decided to shorten all age groups to 40km (2 laps) which produced some very high intensity racing.
Paul Robey, the sole M10 entrant headed out early by himself and diligently completed the 40kms in fine style.
Our 3 F3 competitors, decided on consensus to do 1 lap as a social bunch ride, before undertaking a 20km single lap race once the traffic controllers were all set up. This race turned out to be more of a 20km TT as according to Cat Riley who finished 1st, she wasn’t waiting to get rolled in a sprint by the other 2. Alison arrived 2nd, with Elizabeth Lowe in 3rd.
3 M2 and 6 M4 competitors headed out together and all stayed together for the first blistering lap which was covered in around 32 minutes. Whilst hard to report on all the attacks from the start finish line, it was a completely different story at the end, with all 9 competitors filtering in as small groups or individuals. M4 saw Gerard Tiffen arriving solo at the finish with no-one else in sight for a dominant win in M4. Paul Scherl 2nd and Peter Young 3rd rounded out the M4 category. M2 was similar, lead home by a solo Jason Irwin, ahead of Andrew McCosker 2nd and David Parker 3rd.
M5 and M6 headed off together, only dropping 2 on the first lap before a very hard fought 2nd lap. However M5 changed the script with 3 coming to the finish for a fast and furious sprint. It was decided that Christophe Barberet, took the win over Steve Blackburn with a bike throw at the finish. With Nathan Spillane a bike length back. Notable mention to Steve, who managed to back up for 2nd the next day in the Auscycling ACT Road Race also.
M7 saw another dominant performance with Paul Welsh, attacking on almost every climb, and the bunch chasing hard the whole race. Paul arrived solo well ahead of his competitors who contested a hard fought sprint for the line, in which Michael Foulds 2nd edged out Ian Preston 3rd just ahead of the ever present David Dickson.
M8 and M9 rolled away together and which saw yet another hard fought race, with the bunch doing plenty of attacking over the closing stages of the race. Brian Peak took 1st, Anthony Beasley 2nd and Bruce McMillan all arriving individually, but insight of each other followed closely by Kevin Woods. M9 saw Mark K Taylor took 1st finishing in amongst the M8 field, while Alex Sommariva took 2nd. A notable mention goes to Howard Moffat who while coming last some time later was determined to finish and not DNF, even after having to stop and fix attend to a slow leaking tire 5 times!
