Pedal Power – Traffic Controller Course
Pedal Power ACT, in association with Roads ACT have scheduled a FREE Traffic Controller Course for the Cycling clubs and Community of the ACT for the past three years. Roads ACT have once again enabled FREE access to this training for two more dates in 2017.
The Traffic Controller training that is provided meets the NSW and the ACT requirements and provides the appropriate qualification to allow a registered person to control traffic at cycling (and other) events.
The Traffic Controller Training courses will be held for free for Canberra cycling clubs and cycling organisations in July and again in November. Spaces are limited for each training course.
Fully subsidised by Roads ACT these courses have been organised to assist in minimising costs on cycling clubs and organisations and help train volunteers, or club appointed marshals to fulfil the traffic controller duties at cycling events. We urge you to make use of this generous offer and assist your club and the broader cycling community by having more trained and skilled operators available for club and open events in the ACT. Please note ALL registrants must have a current driver’s license.

Please note the policy on members marshalling a race a year to support club races at https://actvets.cc/racing-with-us/marshal-schedule/. Note that members should not leave it to the last minute to try and find a replacement if they can’t make their allotted marshaling duty.

The perfect weather also saw the welcome return of many familiar faces and a few crit riders making their road debuts. Alwyn Chilver was back after a five-year break. Kevin Woods (2 years), Michael Hanslip/Kathryn Passalis (1), Francois (2), Vince Dunn (2). John Thorn was back from an inland adventure with Pauline which probably peaked in excitement when they bumped into Jason Parkes in Alice Springs.

RACE REPORT:
Old Federal Highway – 3rd June
Mother Nature put on a beautiful display of a perfect winter’s day. The clouds did threaten to come across and lower the temperature somewhat, but they quickly dissipated and the warm afternoon lasted until the race finished.
We barely had time to send all of the riders off and grab the remaining equipment before A grade had completed their first lap. They were, at that stage, still together as a bunch. In fact, most of the grades were still together on the first lap, except for E grade.
By the second lap, the eventual winner of A grade, Peter Marshall, was showing his hand and had pulled out front riding on his own. A grade had caught F grade and was narrowing the gap on E grade. The large B grade bunch had managed to make up some ground on A grade and was pulling further away from C grade. D grade was still working well together.
For A grade’s third lap, Peter was still well in front and the final result looked inevitable. But A grade had clearly put the pace on as they had widened the gap to B grade. Not surprisingly, by this stage the gaps back to C and D grades had widened substantially, yet the grades were still largely together.
E grade were the first to race to the finish line with James Curran putting on a massive sprint to cross first. In fact, the average lap time for the winner of E was 23.3 minutes, while the average lap time for the winner of D grade was 23 minutes. So E grade had a very good ride. E grade was closely followed by A grade, with Peter being able to hold off the chasers to win by about 2 minutes. Good luck to handicapper figuring that one out. We had feared that all of the grades would come across at once, but fortunately the gaps between the grades remained orderly.
I will not list the results as they are already available on the RMS.
