We have been asked by our friends at Vikings Cycling Club to share the following information regarding group rides they organise.
- Contact Tracing. All riders must now pre-register for EVERY Vikings organised social ride (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/105934533040). If you haven’t, sign the notebook provided at the start (BYO pen please).
- Every ride will have a COVID coordinator. Responsible for managing social distancing, hygiene and advising if a change in behaviour is needed. If you don’t follow their instructions, you won’t be able to continue on the ride.

Saturday, 27th June: Lookout Hill Graded Scratch
Note: Racing is still free this weekend.
Where: Observation lookout on Tidbinbilla Road about 2.5 km towards Tharwa from Point Hut / Tidbinbilla Rd intersection (or about 4.5 km from Tharwa village).
When: 1:30 pm.

Lookout Hill Lookout Hill 3.5km toward Tharwa, U turn, 5km toward Point Hut, U turn to Lookout Hill. ABCD 4 laps, EFG 3 laps.

Framework for “Return to Play in a COVID-safe Environment”
This Framework details how cycling events will be delivered by the ACT Veterans Cycling Club to meet the recommendations of Canberra’s Recovery Plan. From 19 June 2020, Stage 2.2 allows for groups of no more than 100 participants. Refer to the ACT Government guidelines at http://www.covid19.act.gov.au.
Stage 2.2 & 3 Arrangements
- On the day of the event, the race Director will be responsible for ensuring that participants follow these guidelines. Where a participant fails to comply they will be asked to leave the event.
- Any rider who is feeling unwell should not participate. If a rider experiences symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, sore throat, and tiredness, they should stay at home. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist. Coronavirus (COVID-19) Symptom Checker is available at https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/symptom-checker/tool/basic-details.
- Riders with higher risks from Covid19 are advised not to participate:
- People aged 70 years and over;
- People aged 65 years and over with chronic medical conditions;
- People with compromised immune systems; and
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over the age of 50 with one or more chronic medical conditions.
- Race Officials will maintain 1.5m separation and hygiene standards during event setup, running and shutdown. When handling equipment such as signs and radios, Officials are to maintain hygiene by cleaning, wearing gloves and/or regular hand cleaning.
- The Club will organise first aid at each event provided by either a professional organisation or by a Club member with a current first aid certificate.
- Riders and spectators are to maintain a distance of 1.5m from other participants while at the event.
- Hand hygiene is imperative and hand sanitiser will be available at the event.
- No physical contact. Participants are to refrain from shaking hands, pats on the back, etc.
- Post-race refreshments will be provided. Members should bring their own coffee mug.
- If any rider feels unwell in the two weeks following the race, they must advise the Race Committee who will follow up with health authorities. The Rider Management System is used to record event attendees and has their contact details.

RACE REPORT:
Uriarra Graded Scratch – 20th June
24 hardy riders turned out for the first Graded Scratch of winter under the threat of rain and ominous skies lurking on the mountains.
It was a great day of racing, only spoiled by a drunk driver who nearly lost it after passing Howard Moffat on the far turn. A couple of police came out to investigate (in plain clothes – detectives?) but didn’t hang around for long. Happily there were no incidents with any of the participants.
The tough course, from the homestead to the end of the tar, had already earned the nickname “The Mini-Mike”. That is, it had all the best bits of the Iron Mike, a.k.a. the best hilly bits. Yes ‘best’ is relative. A, B, C and D grades completed 2 laps and E one lap.
A Grade were still all together at the completion of the 1st lap, but by the end of the 2nd Steve Crispin had clear air and had plenty of time for some celebratory ‘serpentining’ before crossing the line in victory. The remaining 2 riders were not far behind, and Gerrard Tiffen claimed 2nd by a tire width over Steve Blackburn.
B Grade were almost all together after the first lap but had suffered some extreme social distancing by the end of the 2nd and the win was taken out by the evergreen Dave Dickson over Bruce Goodspeed. Owain Tilley was not too far behind to take 3rd on his own.
C Grade were not looking so solid after the 1st lap and it looked like some pain had already been inflicted. It too had well and truly broken up on the 2nd lap and Grant Shaw got the best of Andrew Matz with David Stewart-Thomson rounding out 3rd.
D Grade only had only 2 riders and managed to finish 1 lap before Anthony Beasley flatted still within sight of the start/turnaround. As he had to tempt Tony Sheehan up from E to keep him company, Tony also decided to call it quits.
E Grade was well and truly broken up by the finish, Alex Sommariva got the better of Russell Marston and Rosemary Robinson finished for a solo 3rd.
The rain held off for the whole race and it was only the marshals that got a bit wet packing up – and those that had ridden out – and some very keen riders that thought a quick Cotter Loop to round out the day would be a good idea.
