COVID Restrictions

As per the ACT Government’s Pathway out of lockdown (https://www.covid19.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/1861643/ACTs-Summary-of-proposed-restrictions-270921.pdf) it appears that Organised Sporting Activities will be able to resume from the 29th October.

We will be seeking clarification as to whether the restrictions outlined will permit cycle racing.

Potential club name change.

I would invite everyone to read through The Bleat today. We have previously asked for feedback on a potential name change and we are now in a position to progress on this historic matter. The proposed name is ‘Capital Region Masters Cycling Club’. Please read the information provided below on how you can vote.

Notice of General Meeting 2021

Special resolution: To change the club name to ‘Capital Region Masters Cycling Club‘

75% of ‘for’ votes, including proxies, of members attending the General Meeting are required to pass the resolution.

The ACT Veterans Cycling Club formed in 1993. While the club has developed a great reputation as ‘the Vets‘ in the local cycling community, the name has two down sides. Firstly ‘ACT’ implies the club is restrictive to the ACT. The club has about 260 members of which at least 20 reside outside the ACT. The club also has many of its road racing courses in the NSW region surrounding the ACT. We need to get race approval from local NSW Councils and NSW Police and to have community support. Sometimes our races are seen as an inconvenience to locals with ‘a bunch of cyclists from Canberra taking over our roads’. A change from ‘ACT’ to ‘Capital Region’ will help purvey the club as belonging to the region, not just Canberra.

Secondly the term ‘Veterans’ is generally more associated with military veterans rather than older athletes. The club has been approached a few times under the misapprehension that the club is for military veterans. Using the term ‘Masters’ will be more in line with other sports and is also reflective of other cycling clubs affiliated with the Australian Veterans Cycling Council being referred to as Masters. We anticipate that the club will transition over time to being referred to as ‘the Masters‘ rather than ‘the Vets‘.

The mechanics of changing the club’s name are fairly straight forward and can be implemented over time without requiring a set cutover date for everything. There will be negligible costs involved. Once this resolution is resolved, either for or against, the committee with look at options for club signage and race kit.

While a couple of alternate club names have been proposed, the Committee endorses the name ‘Capital Region Masters Cycling Club‘ and recommends members vote for the change of name.

Please be aware there are a number of heavy vehicles that will be entering and exiting River Road and Cork Road from Forest Drive.

Cyclists are asked to slow down and take extra care especially when descending Forest Drive as these trucks cannot stop quickly if you cross their path. Construction speed limits apply, please abide by these and always be ready to stop suddenly if required.

Equestrian users, mountain bikers, walkers and runners will also need to take additional care in these areas, especially when crossing Forest Drive.

Second Vetz handicap Zwift race

Vets gathered in the Zwift world again on Saturday to duke it out over a hilly circuit course that took riders between 57 and 80 minutes for the 37 riders who finished. Compared to the number of registrations the day before, quite a few did not start–surely they weren’t put off by the rain? Although most of the race information is provided via Facebook, it’s still possible to keep informed by other means. Let me know if you want to be involved. Results are below. The secret handicap format with a mass start allowed riders to form bunches of equal ability to battle it out. Then a handicap was applied to encourage riders to fight on until the end.

Dear Vets,

I hope you’re all able to enjoy daily rides preparing for the return of racing. Tomorrow we may learn more from ACT Health regarding the roadmap out of lockdown in the ACT and how that will affect our race program. With the criterium season due to start on Tuesday 5 October we still have a couple of weeks for the lockdowns to continue to prove successful if that happens.

I also wanted to thank on behalf of the Committee those members that responded to our recent call for help, we welcome your support and will be in touch.

The ACT Government will announce on Tuesday if the current lockdown will be extended, which is looking likely. If it is, we’ll have to cancel Saturday’s race. Updates will be made in RMS, Facebook and via a special Bleat email.

Paint and Painting Gear

After putting a 1st coat of white paint on the interior of the shipping container, there was an understandable lack of enthusiasm to do another one. We have left over white paint, rollers, poles and trays (most unused) that we can offer to members.

Reminder: All riders must pre-register on the ACT Vets website (https://rms.actvets.cc/calendar) by 17/09/2021 6:00 PM prior to the race. There is no registration on the day.

Any requests for Grade changes should be sorted out with the Handicapper prior to registration.

Where: Assemble at Uriarra Rd / Brindabella Rd, T-Junction. From North Canberra slightly faster Coppins crossing & right onto Uriarra Road. From Sth Canberra follow Cotter Road down to bridge crossing, turn right onto Brindabella Road.

Vetz shift to Zwift

Around 50 vets and others participated in the Vetz inaugural Zwift race last weekend. I’d like to thank Jimmy Carrol and Steve Crispin for organising this gruelling event. While most Canberrans were contemplating what to do on a rainy Saturday morning, some Vets were flogging themselves between about 90 minutes to over two hours in a 60km handicap race. Those who finished reported being ‘shattered’ but satisfied they’d got in such a hard effort with one rider claiming wattage PBs all over the place. Who were these Zwifters you may ask? Of course, there were about five of the club’s hard core members, a crowd of the October to May group plus a few new members. I’m in the don’t-have-the-equipment group, but certainly was an interested onlooker. There will be more races and we will be taking on board your feedback to improve the event. Check out the ACT Vets Cycling Club Facebook page for all the event preparation, results and feedback communications. Thanks once again to Steve and Jimmy for getting the event off the ground.

Vuelta Espana

Those who followed the Spanish grand tour this year certainly wouldn’t have been disappointed as we had Jack Haig on the podium, only the second Aussie to do so after the great Cadel (and he should have won had it not been for a dodgy neutral spares wheel change), and Michael Storer winning stages and getting the King of the Mountains jersey–only the second Aussie after Simon Clarke. Every stage was a drama with breakaway wins, a fantastic GC battle, the return of Fabio Jacobson and the implosion by Lopez on the penultimate stage. As mentioned in The Bleat, Canberra rider Jay Vine was tackling his first grand tour and wasn’t he amazing! Surely he’ll be an inspiration to all those national level riders that it is possible to not even win from scratch at the Haycarters handicap in Cootamundra in 2019 and yet be matching it with the world tour pros just over two years later.
