“I woke up this morning and had a goal – and that was to win”
Oscar Chamberlain – Junior Time Trial World Champion. (Canberra cyclist)
CRuMBS out and about (Capital Region Masters Blokes and Sheilas)
It’s another international edition with results from such far-flung places as Gunning and Glasgow. Remember last year when the world road champs were held just down the road in Wollongong and it cost a bomb to watch it all on Stan Sport? Well, this year it’s all free on SBS On Demand with track, road, BMX, MTB and much more.
Alana Forster has backed up with more fantastic results at the world champs. She lives in Ballarat but visits Canberra to see her parents and has raced at Sutton and Uriarra Homestead this winter season. Her story is one of conquering adversity after being involved in a horrific car crash. You can read her story here. Alana’s results rank at the very top of club’s greatest riders and just below Sue Powell, who won a gold medal in the Women’s Individual Pursuit C4, at the 2012 London Paralympics, setting a new world record in the process, and a silver medal in the Women’s Individual Pursuit C4. At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, Sue also won the silver medal in the 3 km Women’s Individual Pursuit C4.
C5 track 10km Scratch race
This 10km scratch race was a battle between the sprinters who wanted a bunch sprint and the endurance riders who kept attacking. With 5 laps to go, Alana took a flyer to create a quarter-lap break. The bunch were hesitant to chase as medals were up for grabs and they didn’t start to mow her down until the last lap. It was all too little too late for the bunch so she held on for a clear win to nab the ultimate prize for her brave racing.
Moving to the road, Alana was second in the 28.2km ITT, 1:14 behind Sarah Storey of GB who clocked a 42.5 km/h average, then in the 78km road race Alana was 7th, 4:04 behind Sarah Storey again.
NSW masters champs at Gunning
Gunning didn’t disappoint weather-wise, with a howling gale on Saturday and rain on Sunday. Best results were Bruce and Mark taking out first and third in the M9+road race, respectively, and Owain Tilley taking the gold in the M8 ITT. Well done everyone.

Race Reports
Criterium SFP 13 August 2023
Weather wise we dodged any real rain, with only a very light sprinkle during the race. Apart from that it was ideal race weather, cool with very little wind. With the fewer than expected numbers, today’s criterium was run with a slight difference. 14 starters lined up for the Grand Départ and set off behind a lead vehicle for a neutral first lap. All grades then raced for 50 minutes plus 2 laps.
The pace was fairly kind to most riders for the first 10 minutes then, unsurprisingly, gaps started to appear as the attacks began, until eventually the elastic band broke for most and we had riders spread around the entire course, with the inevitable of some being lapped. This did not stop anyone giving it 100% no matter what grade or position on the course.
Into the final few laps and there was a mix of riders putting everyone else to the sword, with Rainer Wilton (A Grade) Ed Logue and Christophe Barberet (B Grade) Kevin Welles and Roslyn Hurt (C Grade) leading there way.
At the finish line, for overall honours, it was Rainer Wilton first, with a very strong ride by Roslyn Hurt for second (lucky the Handicapper wasn’t watching) and Ed Logue in third place.
Thanks very much to Kim for coming out, moon boot and all, to open up, Tristan for setting up the signs and marshalling, Simon for First Aid, Kurt and Marlena Wilton for timekeeping, bell and signs and Andrew Remely for ensuring the track was clear. Without this assistance we could not have put on today’s race. Results

Racing Calendar changes – please see below
Subject to approvals from NSW and ACT governments, the dates have changed for the following events:
Saturday, August 26 | Iron Mike Moved from August 19 as the AusCycling ACT RR championship is being held that morning on the same course. |
Sunday, October 15 | The 2023 Gunning (aka Peter McLennan Memorial) event. Start/Finish at Bredalbane, using the community hall as race central Consists of a TT event followed by the usual 48km lap – once or twice depending on your grade. The handicapper is considering letting D grade vote on their lap count… The single day approach facilitates (i) the ability to attract potential 2024 members though the use of the single day trial licence, and (ii) reduces event costs hiring NSW traffic controllers. |
The dates of the NSW and ACT AusCycling events were not available at the time the Calendar was submitted to the ACT government for approval in 2022.
