TRACK RACING REPORT- THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER

Thursday 19 October saw the first track racing session for the 2023-24 season. The weather was perfect
for track racing, sunny, moderate temperature and virtually no wind. Attendance was reasonable (13
riders) for early season.
The 8-lap A grade scratch race started with Ben Robey leading out at a comfortable tempo. Craig
Kentwell and Ben Davis took turns leading, until John Paul De Sousa rolled to the front on lap 5, raising
the pace and stringing out riders. Conan Liu took over mid lap and, as expected, further livened up the
race, dropping two riders off the bunch. By lap 7 Steve Jones and Martin Graham were poised to take
over and as the bell lap commenced, both riders surged off the front to duel for the win. With a quarter
lap to go Steve drew ahead of Martin and held out for the win. Martin was a comfortable second, followed
by Conan Liu in third.
The B Grade scratch race began with Ian Drayton leading out. The first half of the race saw a steady
increment in the pace as riders swapped turns on the front. By Lap 6 Hamish Anderson was out front
holding a brisk tempo. On Lap 7, Ian Drayton rolled into the lead and carried a consolidated pack into the
bell lap. On the bell, Ian surged out and almost caught the pack off guard. However, Alison Hale and the
rest of the bunch soon shot past the second rider and took up a pursuit. Alison surged past Ian in the
back straight, with several riders in tow. Hamish Anderson passed Bruce Griffin around the high banked
final turn. The result was Alison first, Hamish second and Bruce third.
The second event was a 1-lap standing start time trial. This event is quite technical and requires a very
strong initial acceleration and sustained, high-speed sprint to the finish. Not all riders had their technique
honed to perfection in this first race session. However, John Paul De Sousa (29.02s), Martin Graham
(29.17s) and Wayne Benham (29.83s) put in good times in A grade. Hamish Anderson from B grade was
a stand-out in this event, setting the quickest overall time at 28.97s.
The evening’s racing closed with the usual Italian Pursuit. Teams of six riders contested the race. Team
1 made a good start. However, the back markers for Team 2 were caught off guard by the start. They
quickly caught up. Unfortunately, the teams lead rider, Graeme O’Neill, hesitated for a moment after
hearing anguished cries from the rear. This was all it took for Team 1 to establish an initial lead. For the
rest of the race both teams worked efficiently and were well matched for pace. However, team 1 held
their initial lead throughout, allowing the anchor rider, Steve Jones, to take a comfortable win for the
team. It would have been a very close race without the start hiccup by team 2.
Major place getters were as follows:
8-Lap Scratch: (A1 Grade) Steve Jones, Martin Graham, Conan Liu. (A2 Grade) Craig Kentwell, Ben
Davis, Ben Robey. (B Grade) Alison Hale, Hamish Anderson, Bruce Griffin.
1-Lap SS TT: (A1 Grade) John Paul De Sousa (29.02s), Martin Graham (29.17s), Wayne Benham
(29.83s). (A2 Grade) Craig Kentwell (30.63s), Ben Robey (30.74s). (B Grade) Hamish Anderson
(28.97s), Ian Drayton (32.07s), Alison Hale (32.59s).
Combined Italian Pursuit: Winner Team 1 (Steve Jones, John Paul De Sousa, Craig Kentwell, Ben Davis,
Bruce Griffin, Ian Drayton).
Season Point Score:
Craig Kentwell (15), Hamish Anderson (14), Alison Hale (13), Martin Graham (13), John Paul De Sousa
(12), Ben Robey (12), Ian Drayton (11), Conan Liu (10), Steve Jones (10), Bruce Griffin (10).

Reduced Membership Fee for Racing in the Remainder of 2023

As in previous years, a reduced membership fee of $85 has been set by AVCC
and is now available for new members and non-financial members wishing to
rejoin the club and race between now and 31 December 2023. This offer
typically gives previously non-financial members insurance coverage and
eligibility to race for 3 months in the first part of the criterium or track
season.  Register and pay via the AVCC online membership portal at
https://memberdesq.sportstg.com//index.cfm?fuseaction=main
<https://sitedesq.sportstg.com/clubscripts/linkblast.cfm?key=DF5D2CAB-254E-4
AFA-AC80-20B30CF8E692&memID=9102007
> &OrgID=10244.  Full 12 month membership
pricing and registration for 2024 will not be known until around
mid-December 2023 at which point we will announce it in the Bleat.

Astute readers will see that the annual membership of $120 offers a better
value racing proposition than the reduced membership fee of $85 for 3 months
of racing, in addition to year round insurance coverage. These minimum price
points are set by the AVCC and not by the club.

Out and About – Bowral Classic

Over the weekend several Masters riders were among the 3,000+ participants in the annual Bowral Classic event. If you have photos or stories to share, please send them through to the Bleat. Photos below include Club VP David Parker rolling out alongside fastest-time-favourites Jesse Coyle and Chris Miller for the 150km event, and MyRide member Toby McLenaghan. Both riders also competed in the Bowral Crit held on Saturday at Loseby Park – photos shown below. Thanks to photographer Ian Hutchings for capturing these and many other moments over the weekend. You can find further images on Facebook.
