Crits check-in system at SFP

There is now a criterium check-in system at SFP, so that registered riders can place a tick mark in front of their name on a registered rider start list to indicate they have arrived at the SFP track.

  • This registered rider start list will be placed on a clipboard, next to the fence, adjacent to the timing board. It will be retrieved and used by the RD to speed up the efficiency of the entry chute rollout.
  • These ‘checked-in riders’ will then be called to roll on to the track one-by-one in ascending numerical race order, like ‘priority boarding’. You can help make the process more efficient by assembling behind the race number ahead of you in your grade.
  • During the entry-chute rollout, your race number will be checked against the registered rider list.
  • If you arrive after entry chute roll-out, and prior to the start of the race, you will need to verbally check-in with either the RD or marshal during the safety briefing.
  • Unregistered riders will not be permitted to race.
  • Riders without a valid race number will not be permitted to race.
  • Registered riders arriving late to the track may be permitted to race subject to the RD’s discretion.
  • Your cooperation to help implement this step, means that only financial members who have registered for the race are competing on the SFP track, and that our insurance coverage is not compromised
  • Committee members will be on hand to help provide guidance.

New Helmet Standard coming… but not yet for Masters.

The new “Consumer Goods (Bicycle Helmets) Safety Standard 2024” is being adopted by States and Territories with an 18 month transaction period from the 2001 Safety Standard.  What this means is that helmets will become available in stores with various international standards approvals for use on the road, but without an AS/NZS/2063 sticker they are not permitted to be used in Australian Masters Cycling Council events. Please check your helmet to make sure you are using an approved helmet before rolling out in an event.

CRMCCers dominate the podium at Tolland

CRMCC members dominated the top 10 of the 88km Tolland Open Handicap held at
Ladysmith near Wagga Wagga on Saturday. Ben Morrison took out the sprint over
Gerard Tiffen and Tristan Dimmock, with Jeremy Gillman-Wells in 7 th , thereby
vacuuming up over $5,000 in prize money! Scratch finished 6 minutes down on the
winners, no doubt sparking calls for a regrade of many riders prior to the next
handicap. Great to see that race is keeping up tradition with the awarding of the
winner’s sash.

Canberra riders clean up in Tolland. L to R Gerrard Tiffen, Ben Morrison and Tristan
Dimmock.

Come join E grade
E grade numbers have plummeted recently with zero competitors last week. To help
entrants get a sense of racing, riders from other grades are encouraged to ride with
them as part of their warm-up. Other riders can do a turn at the front but with the aim

of maintaining the pace but not dropping any of the E graders. The escorts must also
respect the flow of the race and not chase down any attacks that may be launched
by the likes of Jan Koehler and others.

Mark Cantrill C to B

Crits Race Report – Tuesday 18 March

As we enter the last few weeks of the summer Criterium season, 80 riders turned up still in need of their crit fix.

They were greeted by an unusually mild and windless evening making for great race conditions, the only challenges being a family of ducks on the infield that would occasionally wander onto the track in front of the onrushing cyclists.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get any E,F,G racers, so A and C grades kicked off the evening’s events.

A grade was off first with Matt Rizzuto not even making it round one lap before puncturing – a quick change had him back in the field a lap later.

Jason Irwin was then straight off the front but was caught before long. The group were stretched out over the next few laps before a group of four broke away including Marc Vroomans and Jason Irwin again.

Ben Morrison got a good gap with 10 minutes to go and a break of 5 soon formed including Denis Mungoven, Greg Harris and Jason.

Glen Goggin had a dig with 2 laps to go, however, it was not to last and after being reeled in the race ended in a sprint finish with Ben Morrison just beating Gerard Tiffen by less than half a wheel with Stuart Griffiths in third.

The C grade race was a close affair with sixteen riders taking part. Ian Preston and Rob Langridge set the pace from the start before Mark Vardy took over driving the group, with CRMCC debutant Mark Cantrill looking comfortable in the bunch.

Ian Preston then made a break before being brought back to the group after a lap. The group then settled into a steady pace for the last few laps, only interrupted by the kamikaze ducks on the home straight.

It was left to Mark Cantrill to take the honours at the line being closely watched by handicapper Rob Langridge in third with Mark Vardy separating the two in second.

Another good turnout for B grade with 25 riders. Within half a lap of the off, Dominic Romano made a trademark attack pulling a few riders away, before regrouping. The bunch was getting stretched with some powerful turns on the front.

Several breaks followed with Kim Pedersen being particularly visible at the front. After 15 minutes a group of 6 formed and made some good progress in gapping the rest before getting caught. Krusty Bryant and Rowan McMurray made attempts to get away but to no avail.

A dig by Christophe Barberet with two laps to go was unsuccessful leading to a final sprint with Paul Scherl taking line honours followed by Todd Sowter and Paul Connor.

D grade was formed by a group of 9 who set of at an orderly pace with no one keen to test the others for the first few laps. Dale Dummett and Kevin Newhouse then started to pick up the pace and got a gap before being caught.

The action started with 3 laps to go with Jonathan Chowns trying to get away before Paul Clare drove to the line to take the win, followed by David Gunther and then Dake Dummett.

Thanks to the race team for helping out – Craig Kentwell, Ryan Fawke and Rob Langridge
