Race Report – Stromlo Crits – 7 October 2025

A cool and windy evening welcomed 80 riders to the first evening of racing for the 2025/26 criterium summer season.

There was a good number of racers for all the grades and this with the short race durations made for entertaining racing.

First up was out inaugural women’s participation criterium, which we have included to increase the number of women racers by adding an option for those that want to build confidence in riding on the criterium track, or who prefer cycling in a smaller group.

The first event saw Shirley-Anne Taylor, Cat Riley and Sharon Landy kicking off the season. Shirley-Anne showed that her good form from earlier in the year continues, trying to catch D grade and in the process coming first over the line followed by Cat and Sharon.

E grade saw four battling it out. The small group didn’t give any of the riders protection against the wind, which was at its strongest for the first races, but they battled well throughout with Chris Copeland showing well to come in first ahead of Rico Fitch and Colin Calderwood.

Sixteen D Grade masters lined up for a tactical race as the skies cleared. The early laps saw a steady pace as the bunch tested each other through the corners. A few riders attempted small breaks, but none stuck as the pack quickly closed gaps. Mid-race, positioning became crucial with frequent surges. In the final laps, the pace lifted, stringing out the bunch and sending a few off the back. Coming into the last lap, three riders fought for the win with Russell Marston taking the honours followed by Paul Angelatos and Kevin Newhouse.

B grade then took centre stage with 20 riders aiming for an early season work out. It was clear from the off that some had done plenty of winter training, with the first 3 laps averaging 43kph driven at first by Krusty Bryant and quickly followed by Mark Terracini and Craig Lindenmayer. Chris Murphy then made a break for it after 5 laps and at one point had a gap of about a third of a lap but after the group had to manage a kangaroo on the track, everything came back together. The pace was too high for many, and the group was whittled down to 9 for the final contest, which saw Chris Murphy crossing ahead of Andrew McCosker and a fast-finishing Craig Lindenmeyer.

C grade had 16 riders and started off at a leisurely pace with the group all together for the first few laps. After 10 mins, the action started with Ian Preston having a dig and although this didn’t stick, the pace was rising with the group well stretched out after 15 minutes. Mick Hanbury then made an attempt to get away but this was thwarted first by more Kangaroos and then by a rugby ball appearing on the back straight from some nearby kids. All made it safely through to a well fought finish with new member Marek Bilski taking 1st from Charles Black and Ben Healy.

The final race was A grade with a good turnout of 25 riders. The pace was high again with a few riders suffering off the back. Dan Lekhac had an early pull on the front before Stuart Griffiths went clear. This only lasted 4 laps before the group came back together but then things got stretched with Ben Morrison, Matt Rizzuto and John Forrest going clear. Stuart then made a huge effort to chase down the lead three, with the finale being decided between these four. Ben took first place followed by Matt and John, however Stuart was unfortunate to have a tyre go when sprinting and crashed out only 10 metres from the line. The following bunch was neutralised to allow Stuart to get attention from our first aider. Stuart was back on his feet, and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back racing soon.
