Club Name Change

The club is considering a name change. This is related to a number of factors including being more inclusive of members in both the ACT region as well as surrounding NSW areas; as well as feedback around the use of “Veterans” in the clubs name.

Please provide suggestions to committee@actvets.cc.

To get the creative juices flowing – first horse in the race at the moment is “Capital Region Masters Cycling Club”

The next ETC Training course is on 24th July.

Shipping Container Lights

The Shipping Container now has lights.

Van Volunteers

As we transition into the new arrangements for the race van, we are looking to establish a pool of members who would be interested in taking on responsibility to prepare the van, drive it out to races and return it to Stromlo.

Members who drive the van to an event would still be able to participate in the race.

Members who are willing to be included in the roster should contact secretary@actvets.cc

Note that the van is a manual gear change.

RACE REPORT:

Sutton Driver Training, Graded Scratch – 5th June

On a clear 10-degree sunny day with a cold westerly wind making it feel much colder, 42 riders turned up to give the short sharp hills of the Sutton Driver Training Centre a go.

First off was C and D grade. C grade had 11 starters and all play nice and stayed together for the whole of race, it all can down to a bunch sprint finish with Steve Jones, who had sat comfortably on the back of the brunch the whole race, took out first place, followed by Lance Purdon and Adam Strickland. D grade also had 11 starters. They too stayed together most of the time though Robert Langridge did try a break off the front along the straight but was soon caught. The bunch spilt up on the final time down the long front straight with Michael Hanbury first, Robert Langridge second and John Stockman third.

Next was E and F grades, no G graders. Four E graders and two F graders started together, and one lap in Rosemary turned up a bit late to join the bunch. It was 3 laps in when the bunch started to break up, but it was not the F grades that were falling behind. The wind its toll those hanging off the back. Alison Hale showed that all her track training has paid off, winning the sprint followed by Chris Reis and Rosemary Robinson for E grade and Kevin Newhouse following close behind to get the F Grade win.

Last was the fast boys, A and B grade. Only four A graders started and seven B graders. The A graders also played nice starting together for half the race before a few breaks were tried, but ended in a sprint with Jimmy Carrol beating Paul Scherl with Daniel Lekhac getting third. C grade was the only grade to have a successful breakaway with Daniel Crocker and David Dickson working together to stay off the front for the whole race, though Christopher Short tried hard to catch them. In the end Daniel and David couldn’t decide who should get the win, but Daniel went over the line first. Daniel got second and Christopher got a valiant third.

Thanks all for a great race to watch. Thank you to Peter Harding for helping me, Simon the first aider, and Ian McVay for driving the van and bring the hot water urn so we could have a warm drink at the end the races.
