Crits check-in system at SFP
There is now a criterium check-in system at SFP, so that registered riders can place a tick mark in front of their name on a registered rider start list to indicate they have arrived at the SFP track.
- This registered rider start list will be placed on a clipboard, next to the fence, adjacent to the timing board. It will be retrieved and used by the RD to speed up the efficiency of the entry chute rollout.
- These ‘checked-in riders’ will then be called to roll on to the track one-by-one in ascending numerical race order, like ‘priority boarding’. You can help make the process more efficient by assembling behind the race number ahead of you in your grade.
- During the entry-chute rollout, your race number will be checked against the registered rider list.
- If you arrive after entry chute roll-out, and prior to the start of the race, you will need to verbally check-in with either the RD or marshal during the safety briefing.
- Unregistered riders will not be permitted to race.
- Riders without a valid race number will not be permitted to race.
- Registered riders arriving late to the track may be permitted to race subject to the RD’s discretion.
- Your cooperation to help implement this step, means that only financial members who have registered for the race are competing on the SFP track, and that our insurance coverage is not compromised
- Committee members will be on hand to help provide guidance.
New Helmet Standard coming… but not yet for Masters.
The new “Consumer Goods (Bicycle Helmets) Safety Standard 2024” is being adopted by States and Territories with an 18 month transaction period from the 2001 Safety Standard. What this means is that helmets will become available in stores with various international standards approvals for use on the road, but without an AS/NZS/2063 sticker they are not permitted to be used in Australian Masters Cycling Council events. Please check your helmet to make sure you are using an approved helmet before rolling out in an event.

TRACK RACING REPORT- Thursday 6 March
Thursday 6 March saw the eighteenth track racing session for 2024-25. There are only two competitive
sessions left this season. This session saw the completion of the four event Omnium Championship.
Congratulations to Hamish Anderson for winning that series. The season point score will conclude next
week and Hamish has an unbeatable lead in that Championship.
Conditions at the Bundadome were warm with a strong headwind in the front straight and turn 1. This
moderated slightly over the evening. Attendance, eight riders, was satisfactory for this season.
The 8-lap A grade scratch race had a field of four starters. The race commenced with Craig Kentwell
leading out and controlling the pace for two laps. Conan Liu then took the lead and upped the pace a
notch for the next two laps. After turns on the front by Ben Davis and Hamish Anderson, Craig Kentwell
made a move on lap 7 and gained a small gap before the pack was energised going into the bell lap.
Conan Liu struck out on the bell lap closely followed by Hamish Anderson. Conan held out Hamish for
the win and Craig Kentwell came in after Hamish for third place.
B Grade had four starters with Ken Birch leading out and further one lap lead outs by Graeme O’Neill, Ian
Drayton and Phil Coulton. Ian and Phil opened a gap on Ken Birch on lap 5. Graeme was slow to react
but eventually passed Ken in a fruitless pursuit of Ian and Phil. Phil Coulton did very well to overcome Ian
Drayton for the win. Graeme trailed in a long way back for third place.
The evening’s second event was the final Omnium event, an all-in (A & B grade), 2-lap handicap. Ben
Davis took this out. Hamish Anderson snatched second place with the points gained providing him with a
slim (1 point) margin over Craig Kentwell and Conan Liu in the Omnium Championship. Other handicap
place getters were, in order, Craig Kentwell, Phil Coulton, Conan Liu.
The scheduled third events were snowball points races. These had intermediate and final sprints with
escalating points as the race progressed. The results for A Grade were Conan Liu (14), Ben Davis (9)
and Hamish Anderson (7). The B grade snowball was a close contest between Ian Drayton (11) and Phil
Coulton (10). Graeme O’Neill earned third place with 6 points.
The racing concluded with the usual Italian Pursuit. Team 1 had 3 riders and Team 2 had 4 riders.
Conan Liu volunteered to do two anchor laps for team 1. However, in the event, Ben Davis appeared to
do the 2-lap lead-out. This might not have been the optimal choice for Team 1, as they conceded a close
win to Team 2. Both teams rode well.
Major place getters were as follows:
8-Lap Scratch: (A1 Grade) Conan Liu, (A2 Grade) Hamish Anderson, Craig Kentwell, Ben Davis (B
Grade) Phil Coulton, Ian Drayton, Graeme O’Neill.
2-Lap handicap (A & B Grades) Ben Davis, Hamish Anderson, Craig Kentwell, Phil Coulton, Conan Liu.
8-lap Snowball: (A1 Grade) Conan Liu (14 pts) (A2 Grade) Ben Davis (9 pts), Hamish Anderson (7 pts),
Craig Kentwell (3 pts) (14.45s) (B Grade) Ian Drayton (11 pts), Phil Coulton (10 pts), Graeme O’Neill (6
pts).
Italian Pursuit: Winner Team 2 (Craig Kentwell, Hamish Anderson, Ian Drayton, Phil Coulton).
Season Point Score:
Hamish Anderson (349), Conan Liu (298), Graeme O’Neill (266), Phil Coulton (248), Craig Kentwell (219),
Ian Drayton (212), Ken Birch (144), Sarah Stephens (139), Ben Davis (131), John Paul De Sousa (127),
Steve Jones (124), Wayne Benham (100), Alison Hale (92), Warwick Wilson (84), Dave Buckley (16),
Paul Connor (16), Gary Aisbitt (15).
Final Omnium Point Score
Hamish Anderson (16), Craig Kentwell (15), Conan Liu (15), Graeme O’Neill (11), Phil Coulton (10), Ben
Davis (10), John Paul De Sousa (9), Ken Birch (8), Sarah Stephens (4), Alison Hale (2), Gary Aisbitt (2).
Crits Race Report – Tuesday 4 March
A quick note about last Tuesday racing action. Thank you to all involved that made the
evening of racing possible, from committee members present on the night, Ian Hutchings
and Simon Costello to Chris Filiatrault marshalling and Ryan Faulk on first aid duties.
Fairly good evening for racing weather wise with a constant breeze strong enough to make
things interesting. We had one intruder (kangaroo) that took a bit of time to find its way to the
running track without incident.
The evening racing action started with E and F. Only one entrant in each grade made it for a
very slow start though. Good on Chris Copeland and Lindsay Graham for racing and giving it
a go.
Things stepped up a bit with D and B next.
D pretty much stayed as a bunch all race and it came down to a final lap sprint with Paul
Clare winning ahead of Timothy Moore and Kevin Newhouse.
B grade was a bit more energetic thanks to a first lap move from Paul Scherl and Rowan
McMurray. They got a 10 to 15” gap and maintained it for the first 4 laps. It was had work
and by lap 5 the duo split and eventually they both got swallowed by the chasing bunch. The
bunch stayed together until the last few laps when Paul attacked again and was joined by
Tod Sowter. They both worked well together and managed to resist the return of the bunch.
A tight sprint saw Tod win ahead of Paul with Paul Connor leading the bunch home.
Then to C and A grades.
C maintained a good pace all race with a few solo attacks by Tony Rowley and Ian Preston
earlier on. It came down to a bunch sprint though with Ben Davis winning ahead of John
Paul De Sousa and Wayne Benham.
A grade as usual was very eventful. Lap 1 saw a move from Stephen Isbel and Nathan
Spillane, they were quickly reabsorbed. In Lap 3 the move of the night took place with Jason
Irwin and Matt Darling being the instigators. They were soon joined by Stuart Griffiths, Steve
Crispin, Matt Rizzuto and Greg Harris. The 6 of them looked very determined to stay away
and worked well enough to build a gap. The bunch wasn’t yet beaten and chasing hard. With
the laps ticking the gap grew to 25”. By mid race Stuart (always the keen racer) put in some
mighty turns to sort the front group, Greg was a casualty and the group of 6 became 5.
Behind, the chasing bunch had split into 2 groups of 6 each. Those 3 groups kept identical
gaps until the end and It all came down to the last lap action. At the front of the race Jason
attacked in Collarbone Corner and got a gap, Steve compromised his final placing chances
by giving the chase and leading out both Stuart and Matt for a final sprint showdown. Jason
wasn’t finished though and kept a lead in the final strait. It was all very close with Stuart
narrowly edging Matt over the line with Jason 3 rd .
Thanks again to all involved. It was a pleasure to help out the club in a small capacity. Loved
it.
Ciao
