Sutton Super Series Round 1 Race Report
It was a wonderful Mother’s Day with warm weather, no wind, and a good turnout.
E Grade: Michael was the only non-starter, as he kindly drove the van. Jonathan and Dave broke away on the first hill and stayed clear until Jonathan’s chain started giving him problems. Dave took the win, with Elizabeth and Ian taking the minor places.
A Grade: There were five starters. Tristan was the primary agitator, but no breaks stuck until late in the race when Tristan and Tobias got away. Tristan won the two-up sprint, Tobias took second, and Matthew placed third from the remaining bunch.
B Grade: The race started with 15 willing participants. From the finish line vantage point, the field remained neutral for the first 20 minutes. After about 25 minutes, the race began to break up when Steve Lind attacked. A few more riders dropped off when Geoff Hinchcliffe managed to sustain a reasonable gap. Perhaps Ian’s photos will show more of the mid-race action, as Chris appeared to be on the front quite frequently. Geoff and Rainer looked like breakaway contenders late in the race until the final sprint where Andrew won over Christophe, with Alana taking third. It looked like a tough race in the end, with several riders blown away by the attacks in the last third.
C Grade: This race followed a pattern similar to B grade. Ben Shillong was the major attacker; Presto was the major chaser down of breaks. Victor and Simon were distanced halfway through the race, but chased hard. The race began to split due to the insistence of Ben and his breakaway partner, Tony Hrstic. In the end Ben had too much power and won by a large margin over Ed Louge and Tony.
D Grade: Again, due to the lack of wind and good conditions the race stayed together initially. Katie showed her hand and tried to get away. Brought back with Owain and Kevin. Kevin succumbed to a chain problem late in the race. Andrew Remly won the sprint despite being on his limit over the course of the final lap. Alison sprinted into second and Owain powered into third. Jonathan rode well recovering from his chain issues in the initial race of the day in E grade. Katie came in just behind the sprint in 4th place
