Lookout Hill 2 Stage Race Report
The day started out looking great, however by the time the marshals were setting up for the race at Lookout Hill the temperature had dropped considerably and the wind picked up. This was also trialling a different format with a 10 km individual time trial with riders initially heading south towards Tharwa for just over three kms, return past Lookout Hill heading north towards Point Hut road for a further 1.7 km turn and finish at the carpark. This to be followed by a graded scratch road race using two or three laps of the same course.
With cold and wind a significant factor it was decided to start in reverse order, starting with E Grade riders first to depart and only 20 seconds between start times. This meant that the total finish time was compressed and minimised waiting time between the time trial and road race. Despite a small confusion in recording times this proved effective in keeping the riders from getting too cold. The road race was called as soon as practical with only about 15 minutes down time. A through to D grades completed three laps while E grade opted for two laps.
For the time trial starting with the slower riders there was good incentive to chase down those in front and from all accounts everyone was respectful of maintaining a safe distance and not drafting. The slowest time for the 10 km course was 23 minutes 16 seconds and the quickest was Jason Irwin – the only A grader present – with an excellent time considering the conditions of 15:22. Of particular note is that in every other grade than A, riders from the grade below were well paced in their respective higher grade. On elapsed time, from E grade Michael Reppion would have been placed third in D. From D grade Owain Tilley, Katie Gregory and Brian Holloway would have all done well in C. Josh Quilliam would have been second in B grade while David Buckley, Ian Preston, Marek Bilski, Simon Porombka, Andrew Hislop, John Paul de Sousa and Daniel Smith all posted faster times than some of the B graders. Michael Fawke was the fastest B grader followed by Tristan Fuge and Ben Shillong. Overall a great effort by everyone and I hope the riders enjoyed the format.
For the road race, the Lookout Hill climb played a significant factor in the final sprint with those with good climbing legs opening up a gap to the finish line. Jason opted to ride with B and the despite several attacks that were all brought back the group stayed pretty much together until the last few kilometers when Tristan Fuge edged out Christophe Barbaret by only a few seconds with Geoff Hinchcliffe only three seconds further back for third. Jason as the only A grader stayed clear of the top finishes in B giving them a clear run for the line.
C grade had the biggest group with 10 riders and again stayed together until the end where gaps opened up. Josh Quilliam had a comfortable gap for first with Andrew Hislop in second and Victor Boumard in third.
D grade with only 4 riders were sensible in staying together until the end with Bryan Holloway leading Owain Tilley and Katie Gregory in third place. In E grade David Gunther and Michael Reppion had the only close finish of the day fighting it out on the hill. Michael came from ever so slightly behind to snatch the victory on the line while Russell Marston slotted into third.
Many thanks to Claire Aubrey for marshalling and doing a great job in tallying the results, Steve Simms and Ben Healy as turn marshals and Ryan Fawke for first aid – fortunately his professional services were not required. Owain Tilley for collecting the van, driving it to the race and returning it. Without all these roles we could not run the races we all enjoy.

Sutton Driver Training Centre Saturday 6 June 1:30PM

****We still require a Van Driver for this event. If you can help out, please email committee@crmcc.org.au****
Six races will be held over the winter season at the Sutton Driver Training Centre, with riders accumulating the points gained as per the list:
1st 10 points
2nd 8 points
3rd 6 points
4th 4 points
5th 3 points
6th+ 2 points
This scoring system differs from the RMS. 10 points will still be awarded to the winner even if only one rider starts the race.
Riders with the most points accumulated at the end of the series will be crowned grand champions for their grade.
Here are the main rules:
- The final round will be worth double points and riders that participate in all races will get a bonus 12 points.
- Prizes such as gift vouchers (subject to local business generosity) will be presented after the final race for first, second and third places.
- Riders must compete in the final race to receive a prize and be present at the prize ceremony.
- Riders who are promoted will take half their points with them to the higher grade.
- Point scores will be kept for each grade and updated after each round.
- If more than one rider finishes with the same final score, a count-back of the overall results will determine the higher place getter.
- The races may not all be scratch races, with a points race as another option.
Riders intending to compete in the series should make themselves familiar with all the rules. Please note, dates and times are subject to change.
