Gunning 2 Day Event
Your chance to race 154km over two days! (or 104km for E, F, G, Tandem) and Lunch – all for a measly $35.
The club’s signature event, the Gunning two day race, is on over the weekend of the 6/7 May. Saturday starts at 10:00 am with a 4km uphill Prologue just to make it interesting!
For those that groaned at an uphill prologue, we’ve decided to make it interesting by throwing in bonus time on Stage 1! Again, for stage 2, time bonuses will be on offer so a good strategy will be key!
I encourage all members to sign up and make this a great event.

Bill Frost has kindly volunteered to be the Race referee for the two days. In order to run the event, he requires the assistance of Marshals, Escort Drivers and General Helpers to assist.
Payment of $30 per day is available to offset petrol costs and other expenses.

Portaloo
A Portaloo has been booked. We are looking for a volunteer to help with towing duties. If someone is staying in Gunning on Saturday evening and would be able to tow it back to their accommodation overnight, that would save having to tow it back to Canberra.

Requirements
The cost will be $35 for the race and you must be a current member of the club within the AVCC. Please note that we do not have day licences available.
Riders will need to bring their helmet to the registration desk for inspection. Please note that it is an AVCC requirement that all riders must wear a helmet which meets Australian Standards.
Riders must have started the previous stage to compete the next stage. (i.e. if you don’t ride Saturday then you cannot start on Sunday)

DAY 1: Saturday 6th May 2017
Prologue
This year we are going to try something different. The 4km prologue course will be UPHILL. Riders will start from the bottom of the hill (approx 4km from the signon desk) and ride back towards Gunning to the finish line at the top of the hill. Rides will need to make their way down to the start in plenty of time to make sure they are ready at their allocated starting time.
Prologue will start at 10:00am and riders will be sent off at 30 second intervals.
Note if you miss your allocated time you will be sent off at the discretion of the Race Referee.
The following limitation apply to the Prologue
- No Disc Wheels or wheel covers
- No Time Trial specific helmets
- No Time Trial bars either specific or clip on
Tri Spoke or other deep dish wheels are allowed as long as the rim does not exceed 10cm.
Stage 1
Stage 1 will start at 1:30pm and riders will be sent off by grade.
Stage 1 is 50km for all grades.
A revised bonus time will be allocated on both primes for the first three positions (1st – 7 seconds, 4nd – 2 seconds and 3rd 2 seconds) and for the first five positions (1st – 5 seconds, 2nd – 4 seconds, 3rd – 3 seconds, 4th – 2 seconds and 5th – 1 second) at the finish.
DAY 2: Sunday 7th May 2017
Stage 2
The course length will depend on grade:
- A, B, C, D will complete 100km (Note: A Water Bottle will be provided for riders on the Second Lap)
- E, F, G, Tandem will complete 50km
Stage 2 will start at 10:00am for the following grades A, B, C, D with 2 min between grades.
Stage 2 will start at 11:00am for the following grades G, E, F, Tandem with 2 min between grades.

Veterans out and about
The NSW masters road champs were held over the weekend and today in Molong near Orange, and once again Vets members did us proud, albeit riding for Cycling NSW and ACT clubs. Well done all.

RACE REPORTS:
Lookout Hill – 22nd April
It was a perfect afternoon for racing, sunshine and a light breeze particularly different from earlier in the day. We had 45 competitors and 8 officials for an out and back course from Lookout Hill to a couple of 2K past the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Road conditions were good with a couple of pot holes to be avoided from recent wet weather.
Thank you to Tony Weir for cake and Rosemary Robinson for water melon which made a great addition to our usual post race refreshments.
Set up took a little longer than expected despite everyone in place early, so racing started about 15 minutes late. The course was challenging and our last rider was safely back just before 4pm. Thanks to Simon Whitehead our first aider who stayed later than expected until all riders were safely back and he even went out in his van to trail the last 4 riders to the finish line. His first aid for the day included providing cream to one of our marshalls who was experiencing an itching one of their arms. No other incidents apart from a bit of cramping. Well done to all participants for a great day.
A & B grade took off together being a group of 9 at a blistering pace and the leaders turned their first lap after about 45 minutes. Our quickest rider was in A grade finishing the two laps in just over 1 hour 33 minutes. Unfortunately Stuart Roesler who had build up a great lead into the turn after the first lap leading all A & B graders had a problem when his chain when it derailed and became stuck in his frame, bad luck to Stuart.
A grade had a tight finish between Peter Marshal first and Paul Atyeo with Nathan Spillane a little further back in third.
B grade by the end was spread out with the positions going to Peter Young first, then David Dickson with Seymour Savell-Boss third.
C grade completed the first lap without incident and most of the group still together. The finish proved a tight one with Christopher Kon a clear first with a fight for 2nd and third going to Warwick Wilson, followed by John Paul De Sousa who edged out Anthony O’Connor for third spot.
D grade had 12 starters and the largest bunch for the day. The longest ride in doing the 2 lap course came from this group in just over 2 hours. By the end the bunch was well spread with Alain Arbaut first, Des Brown second and Andrew Hislop third.
E grade had 11 starters and completed the course in very good time with first over the line in just over 56 minutes being Gerald Van Ewyk, closely followed by Phil Anderson and close behind in third position Alex Sommariv.
F grade had 4 starters and all finished with all riders being spread across the course by the end. First was Howard Moffat, second Robert Miller and third Paul Robey.
Thanks to our officials Graham Hendrie, Gill Lugg and Kirsty Cummin who assisted at the start/finish with set up, registering riders including manual method after a minor hiccup with our technology. Thanks to our ATCs in Robert Langridge (start/finish), Frank O’Sullivan (Point Hut intersection), Denis Jessop (Corin Rd intersection) and Tony Weir (far turn point).
