Pedal Power – Traffic Controller Course
Pedal Power ACT, in association with Roads ACT have scheduled a FREE Traffic Controller Course for the Cycling clubs and Community of the ACT for the past three years. Roads ACT have once again enabled FREE access to this training for two more dates in 2017.
The Traffic Controller training that is provided meets the NSW and the ACT requirements and provides the appropriate qualification to allow a registered person to control traffic at cycling (and other) events.
The Traffic Controller Training courses will be held for free for Canberra cycling clubs and cycling organisations in July and again in November. Spaces are limited for each training course.
Fully subsidised by Roads ACT these courses have been organised to assist in minimising costs on cycling clubs and organisations and help train volunteers, or club appointed marshals to fulfil the traffic controller duties at cycling events. We urge you to make use of this generous offer and assist your club and the broader cycling community by having more trained and skilled operators available for club and open events in the ACT. Please note ALL registrants must have a current driver’s license.

- Marshals are critical to the survival of our racing schedule as we simply cannot conduct races safely without them. Please note the policy on members marshalling a race a year to support club races athttps://actvets.cc/racing-with-us/marshal-schedule/. Note that members should not leave it to the last minute to try and find a replacement if they can’t make their allotted marshaling duty.

RACE REPORT:
Old Federal Highway, Handicap – F & A Tonelli Trophy – 8 Jul 2017
One of the coldest races of the year. That’s how I would sum up the Tonelli Handicap at Old Federal Highway on Saturday. As riders turned up to sign-on, not only was the weather a talking point but the fact that for the first time in a long time we weren’t racing towards Lake George and back. Instead the course this time was an out and back course from the gravel pit to the Tulip farm 3 times. This is a more challenging course with washing machine hill out to drain the energy of every rider. However I think the course is great as the traffic is very minimal on this section of the road and there is a great final straight for any bunch sprints.
With Bernie and Bruce deciding that it was too cold to race the first off the line were 8 x F graders all wanting the race to start so they could keep warm. Off they went with a 7 min head start to 6 x E graders who were in hot (well as hot as it could be) pursuit. 7 x D graders were next away @ 3 mins behind E then the biggest field of the day with 13 riders in C @ 3 mins after D. 9 x B Graders took off after C @ a further 3 mins behind with our lone A grader for the day (Steve Crispin) giving B grade a 2 min head start. Surely 1 rider against 9 would be an impossible task?
At the first turn the F grade women were taking no prisoners with Angie Wren and Liz Lowe burning off the rest of their grade to hold a slight lead over the tandem at the turn for lap 1. James Curran had put in a solid first lap to close in on the E graders with the other grades coming through mostly split up as washing machine hill was sapping the legs of the sprinters. After lap 1, Steve Crispin had not only caught B grade but was chasing strong with a group of riders. At this stage the weather decided to drop another few degrees and lightly rain with the prospect of snow not too far away.
Meanwhile the racing heated up with riders coming into view for the completion of lap 2, we could see that Angie and Liz were still holding a slender lead over a rider we couldn’t quite identify from the long straight. However it wasn’t long before we identified the rider as the back marker with the after burners on in the form of Steve Crispin. Straight after the turn he passed them and barring snow blocking his 3rd lap Steve was on his own out front for the win. Meanwhile back in the field it was a mixed bags of B graders and C graders in the minor placings with a few wise riders deciding the weather was the winner on the day and opted to head straight for the coffee and tea at the van.
Coming across the line in 1st was Steve Crispin in a time of 1hr 11mins. Average speed was an astonishing 37.7kmh. Some 6 mins after Steve came Matt Hincliffe from B grade followed a further 3 mins back with Alwyn Chilver in C grade. So we had a nice A, B, C for 1st, 2nd & 3rd. The only feat Steve couldn’t pull off on the day was riding back home with the Tonelli trophy. We’ll get it engraved and sent across to you Steve.
Well done to all riders who raced under what were very cold conditions. Thank you to Tess McLachlan who drove a nice and toasty lead car, Ben Healy who I’m sure also had the heater on in the trail car and Warwick Wilson who I’m sure suffered in the elements at the Tulip Farm turn point. Graham Hendrie as always made sure the sign-on, coffee & tea were ready for all riders and quickly calculated the results as they came in. And Tom Roberts our sports med who learnt a valuable lesson to always keep a spare pair of gloves in the car. Hope the hands defrost soon Tom!
