Race Report – Tonelli Handicap 17th June 2023
It was cold with a moderate wind but the day was fine. No sign of the recent fog. 25 starters lined up for the Tonelli handicap at Uriarra Homestead.
E grade was away first with a 9 minute advantage. Russell Marsten and Ashly Sked opened up a significant break to Liz Lowe by the end of the first lap and these two stayed in control of the race to finish 1, 2 by a large margin. Liz came in seventh.
D grade was away next with a 7 minute margin to C2. The course proved too hard with 2 DNFs in this group
C2 started next with a 3 minute gap to C1. C2 stayed together as a tight bunch with just the loss of one DNF and finished as tight bunch with Roslyn Hurt leading them home and finishing 10th overall.
C1 lead out A2 by 4 minutes but had drama at the start with Krusty Bryant suffering a prestart puncture and managing to get it fixed and joining the race 1 lap down. Conan Liu pulled away from the others to come in 5th overall
A2 was next out with Brenton Clark and Jason Irwin sprinting away from the rest and finishing 3rd and 4th overall.
A1 was last out but were unable to make up the gap to the other groups with Daniel Lekhac leading them home to finish 6th overall. Liz Lowe from E grade just held out the fast finishing A1 grade of Steve Crispen (8th overall) and Tristan Dimmock (9th overall) to finish 7th.
There was drama at the finish with ETC Tony Weir having a flat battery at the Uriarra Crossing end of the course with Greg Harris and Simon Whitehead going to his rescue.
A big thanks to the support crew, Simon Whitehead for providing first aid and driving the course to relay messages due to communication difficulties at each end The three ETCs, Tony Beasley, Michael Foulds, Tont Weir, David Buckley for driving the van and assistance at the start and lastly Alex Sommariva for providing me with support at the start and finish and giving me a lift to and from the start..
