CRITS RACE REPORT TUESDAY 23 JANUARY
We had perfect conditions for summer racing with mild conditions, sunny and a very slight breeze. We had 92 people register and turn up to race.
Our first event was A & C Grades with respective 45 and 40 minutes duration plus 2 laps.
A Grade had many attacks throughout with Gerard Tiffen first to go early only to be back with the pack a couple of laps later. At the 10 minute mark Ross Goggin and a couple of others had a go only to return fairly shortly. A few minutes later Nathan Spillane had a go with a couple of others only to blow up and get spat out the back. Laps were going at a good clip with most around the 1minute 40sec, the fastest noted was 1minute 24sec. With 20 minute to go Steve Crispin tested others including the legs of Ross Goggin again and drew a couple with him only to return a few minutes later. With 9 minutes to go David Parker and Jason Irwin with one other had a go only to be pulled back in after a few laps. In the final lap we had a touch of wheels and few got caught up in the resultant fall at the entry to the collar bone corner loop. A bit of damage to a new bike and minor abrasions to the rider which were attended to by our first aider Paul for the evening. This split the bunch with a sprint for the line being very close 1st to Tobias McLenaghan, 2nd to Tristan Dimmock and 3rd Stuart Griffiths. These were closely followed by Jason Irwin, Marc Vroomans and Steve Crispin and many others.
C Grade had 20 starters and had a relatively consistent laps with the group staying together throughout. With 11 minutes to go a break of 3 in John Stokman, Wayne Benham and Myles Trew drew clear of the bunch and stayed in front for awhile before the bunch brought them back. The sprint finish was close but clear separation between 1st John Brotherton, 2nd Bruce McMillan and 3rd Craig O’Neall.
B Grade our largest group of the night with 26 starters, had slightly cooler conditions but also more problems with Roos that had been lurking throughout the previous race. Thanks to roo wrangling from David Parker and Paul Robey at various stages of the evening kept them at bay. Apart from a break with 27 minutes to go where 3 broke free but not for long. It all came down to a sprint finish with Leonard Pooley 1st, Luke Philps 2nd and recently returned Paul Connor 3rd.
D Grade had 15 starters and a more sedate approach to the race which was probably just as well with the lurking Roos. The most notable is that Allan Bontjer raced in his 800th event for the club on the night. D grade circulated well and shared the lead role. The bell lap was late in being rung but didn’t affect the sprint. Only 1 DNF from this group and the final sprint resulted in Tony Sheehan 1st, Dale Drummett 2nd and Shirley-Anne Taylor 3rd.
Our Final group for the night was the smallest with a combined group of 7; E (4 starters), F (1 starter) and G (2 starters). They all rode for 30 minutes plus 2 laps. After a couple of warm up laps the groups came apart. By the half way mark Ally Roche and Rico Fitch split the E grade and went well away until the end with Ally winning well clear of Rico, 3rd place went to Chris Copeland. Bob Miller was our only participant in F Grade and finished strongly while G Grade resulted in Robyn Smallwood 1st and Gai Monahan 2nd.
Thanks to our Marshall David Witham and our First Aider Paul Robey who can’t wait for Simon to return so he can get back to racing himself. Simon made an appearance at the beginning of the evening to say hello and is keen to return as soon as he is able. Also a thank you to Ian Hutchings for opening up, taking photos and putting away.
Final comment is that some angst is occurring with participants experiencing poor behaviour in packs. Remember to hold your line through corners and final sprints. This means if you are a metre from the side of track in a pack stay there all the way around the corner – DO NOT CUT OFF or in front of other riders. Only make changes within a pack it is safe to do so ie do head checks (if possible) both left and right in front and behind. Safety comes first, disregard for others if noticed will result in disqualification. Please keep our environment fun, friendly racing to keep us all fit and enjoy each other’s fellowship.

TRACK RACING REPORT- THURSDAY 25 JANUARY
Thursday 25 January was the third track session for 2024. Conditions were unsettled but rain held off until well after the track session. It was warm with a feint headwind in the front straight. Attendance was again disappointing with only 7 riders, 3 in A grade and 4 in B grade. Still, the riders had a good evening’s racing.
The 8-lap A grade scratch race was led out at an easy pace by Craig Kentwell. Craig stuck on lead for a second lap and raised the pace. On lap 3 Conan Liu took the lead and held it for most of the race. Conan started ramping up the pace and had the pack really motoring over the final 4 laps. John Paul De Sousa and Craig Kentwell stuck with Conan and started to pressure on laps 6 and 7. The final sprint launched with the pack bunched on the banking coming into the bell lap. The sprint was tight with John Paul taking the win and Craig Kentwell overcoming a tiring Conan for the second spot.
The 8 lap B grade scratch was orderly with four riders swapping out one lap turns on the front, up until the penultimate lap when Sarah Stephens and Ed Garnett cranked on the pace. Hamish Anderson was quick to pursue. Something went awry for Ed Garnett as he entered the final banked turn. His bike started the death wobbles. Ed dived on to the grass infield before the inevitable spill. This likely saved him from bad abrasions. Unfortunately, in the spill, Ed’s bike frame reared up and struck him heavily near the temple. He ended with a nasty head gash and appeared to have mild concussion, but otherwise seemed OK. By a stroke of luck, we had two first aiders and an assistant surgeon in attendance. Ed had a thorough assessment before being told not to drive home and have a doctor’s check-up as soon as possible. It was good advice as Ed later had an MRI that discovered 2 cracked vertebrae in his neck – not the news anyone wanted to hear. Oh, and the race result was Sarah Stephens 1st, Graeme O’Neill 2nd, Hamish Anderson 3rd.
The evenings second event was the 200 Fly, an individual, 200 metre, flying start time trial. This is Hamish Anderson’s favourite event and, as usual, he set the fastest time at 13.04 seconds (55 km/hr). Three other riders went under 14 seconds, as follows, John Paul De Sousa (13.54s), Conan Liu (13.78s), Sarah Stephens (13.89s).
The next scheduled events were paired match races. However, with the rider numbers and abilities applicable, it made more sense to have 3 riders in A and B grade match races. The A grade trio was a feast for John Paul De Sousa who attacked early and was never caught. The B grade race was notable for an early attack by Graeme O’Neill. Graeme gained 5m coming from the high banking. He was pursued and passed by Hamish Anderson and Sarah Stephens within half a lap. Hamish went on for the B grade win with Sarah second.
The session’s final event was the usual Italian pursuit. The teams had only 3 riders, so it was very much a team sprint. Sarah Stephens set up Team 2 by blasting around the course on lap 1, providing her team with an early lead. Hamish Anderson and Conan Liu rode impeccably to ensure the lead was not surrendered. Ultimately it was comfortable win for Team 2.
Best Wishes to Ed Garnett for a complete recovery from his injury. Unfortunately, although his neck is stable, it’s 3 months in a neck brace for Ed and no cycling or driving.
Major place getters were as follows:
8-Lap Scratch: (A grade) John Paul De Sousa, Craig Kentwell, Conan Liu (B grade) Sarah Stephens, Graeme O’Neill, Hamish Anderson.
200 m Fly: (A Grade) John Paul De Sousa (13.54s), Conan Liu (13.79s), Craig Kentwell (14.67s) (B Grade) Hamish Anderson (13.04s), Sarah Stephens (13.89s), Graeme O’Neill (15.44s).
Italian Pursuit: Winner Team 1 (Conan Liu, Hamish Anderson, Sarah Stephens)
Season Point Score Update:
