Club road championships and volunteers
We held a highly successful club road race on the weekend despite the late start. I want to acknowledge that we have some work to do in terms of our communication to the volunteers who offered their services, and for some of them it was their first time performing their respective roles. We acknowledge that those of us in the committee need to clearly articulate what is expected of the volunteers and when those tasks need to happen. I also thank the volunteers for stepping up, some of whom have repeatedly helped out. In some of your email inboxes, I have sent you a targeted message asking you to help out a race, because our data informs us that it has been a while since you last helped out, and in some cases you’ve never assisted. This is not an equitable or fair outcome for the club and its membership. Please consider helping out at Tharwa on Sunday 3 November or at SDTC on Sunday 8 December. Please note that prior to developing our policy that will come into effect in 2025 that each member must volunteer in at least one event, the policy has always been that members who fail to help facilitate club events may be deemed ineligible to race by the committee until such time as they have met their obligations.

2024-25 criterium season
The season opener starts on Tuesday 8 October 2024 and the committee is getting ready to dev-test the season’s $160 criterium pass that will cover 24 races concluding on Tuesday 1 April 2025. This covers the Christmas wheel race, and also the Club Criterium championships which we have configured to fit all of the female and male age groups into the one night of racing on Tuesday 18 February 2025.
Reduced annual memberships for the remainder of the 2024 calendar year.
At around the end of September 2024, we should hear from our national body AVCC whether there will be a discounted membership offered this year and its cost. As soon as we hear about it, we will advertise it on the Bleat, and how to sign up to it. If you are reading this email, you are most likely already a member, since it is only active members who remain on our email distribution list. If you are in contact with former members who are waiting for the reduced membership to be announced, please ask them to keep an eye out here in the Bleat or in this section of our website
https://capitalregionmasterscyclingclub.org.au/membership/, as they will need to create a new identity in the Hello Club portal.
2025-26 race calendar and the committee
The committee is working on a draft race calendar and we are trying to avoid clashes where possible with other local and interstate cycling, and cycling related events. We hope to be able to offer at least one race in NSW in 2025-26, and the return of some of our club favourites like the Gravel Pit. Please note that our committee has been reduced with two members performing the functions of other members. The committee has five more meetings before the next Annual General Meeting before we spill all positions and call for new nominations for the committee that will form for 2025-26. We desperately need fresh eyes and renewed vigor, and any contributions to club management and running would be most welcome. I also am open to hearing any feedback about our club and you can contact me directly via email president@crmcc.org.au
The University of Canberra Physio Students Need Your Help
Physiotherapy students from the University of Canberra are looking for some Masters athletes to come and speak with them so that they can understand how people keep going, what they enjoy and is important to them, and the role physiotherapy may have in this. You would need to attend the University of Canberra on Friday 27 September 2024, between 10:00 – 11:30; 11:30 – 1:00; or 1:30 – 3:00, where a small group of physiotherapy students will take a history and perform a limited assessment, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Angie Fearon and Louise Drysdale. For questions or RSVPs, please contact Angie.Fearon@Canberra.edu.au or ph: 6206 8717

Winter track training session for novices and experienced riders
We are offering one more 1hr track session on Sun 15 September 2-3pm. The goal of this training is to stimulate and reinvigorate our track program. Participants must be members or trial riders to register and pay $5 per session online https://rms.crmcc.org.au/calendar?5021616 . We require a minimum of two riders to register to run these sessions. This is for track practice only, no racing, no moto-pacing.
We are also providing this opportunity for club members unacquainted with the art of fixed wheel riding, to come out and try track in the hope that you will join our Thurs afternoon racing program from October 2024. These track practice sessions will be staffed by knowledgeable ‘Club track wardens’, who will open up the velodrome for our booked timeslots, brief participants particularly novices about protocol and safety. Novices wishing to learn on one of the club’s donated track bikes should establish early contact with membership@crmcc.org.au so that we can fit you to the bike.
Note that the velodrome has a high bank and road bikes and street fixies are not appropriate for this venue. Please only bring your kids along as spectators if they are actively (not passively) supervised, due to the risk of serious injury with riders exiting and entering the velodrome gate.
