Crits check-in system at SFP

There is now a criterium check-in system at SFP, so that registered riders can place a tick mark in front of their name on a registered rider start list to indicate they have arrived at the SFP track.

  • This registered rider start list will be placed on a clipboard, next to the fence, adjacent to the timing board. It will be retrieved and used by the RD to speed up the efficiency of the entry chute rollout.
  • These ‘checked-in riders’ will then be called to roll on to the track one-by-one in ascending numerical race order, like ‘priority boarding’. You can help make the process more efficient by assembling behind the race number ahead of you in your grade.
  • During the entry-chute rollout, your race number will be checked against the registered rider list.
  • If you arrive after entry chute roll-out, and prior to the start of the race, you will need to verbally check-in with either the RD or marshal during the safety briefing.
  • Unregistered riders will not be permitted to race.
  • Riders without a valid race number will not be permitted to race.
  • Registered riders arriving late to the track may be permitted to race subject to the RD’s discretion.
  • Your cooperation to help implement this step, means that only financial members who have registered for the race are competing on the SFP track, and that our insurance coverage is not compromised
  • Committee members will be on hand to help provide guidance.

New Helmet Standard coming… but not yet for Masters.

The new “Consumer Goods (Bicycle Helmets) Safety Standard 2024” is being adopted by States and Territories with an 18 month transaction period from the 2001 Safety Standard.  What this means is that helmets will become available in stores with various international standards approvals for use on the road, but without an AS/NZS/2063 sticker they are not permitted to be used in Australian Masters Cycling Council events. Please check your helmet to make sure you are using an approved helmet before rolling out in an event.

ACT Government Travel warning 18 March 2025

Coppins Crossing will be closed between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue on Tuesday 18 March 2025 from 2:00am to 8:00pm.

The closure supports the construction of the new Molonglo River Bridge, and will allow for a large beam structure on the north side of the river to be built.

Motorists will need to follow the below detours:

📍 Southbound from Belconnen: From William Hovell Drive take the off ramp to Parkes Way and merge onto Tuggeranong Parkway.

📍 Northbound from Molonglo Valley: From John Gorton Drive turn onto Cotter Road then follow the ramp onto Tuggeranong Parkway.

The Molonglo River Bridge project will construct a new 200-metre-long bridge across the Molonglo Nature Reserve and the region’s longest river, as well as build 1.7 kilometres of new arterial roads leading to the bridge, and two new intersections.

Once complete it will transform the region and better connect the growing suburbs in the Molonglo Valley to Belconnen and the rest of Canberra.

Crits Race Report – Tuesday 11 March

E grade

Koehler took a good tactical win from Griffin who did well to keep his powderdry until when it counted. Chaloupka in third may have reconsidered his strategy of letting the race come back to him after a fast start.  Having gotten away early and looking like man to beat with a big gap could have just kept going ?

A grade

Early on a couple of good efforts by Griffiths group to get a gap followed by Darling group. Mid race a group of six was getting away with Tiffen making huge effort to bridge back to join the party. Mid race the pace was high resulting in a couple of DNFs and a couple of others left to keep their own pace. Rizzuto and Griffiths put in big moves towards the end of the race who finished 2nd and 3rd with Morrison taking the win.

C grade

Vardy was on a charge after the third lap getting a healthy gap.  Mid race the strain was showing with a couple of rider detached. Preston made an impressive solo break with 10mins to go but only lasted another mins until Pendlebury helped others bridge back. Good fast finish with Pendlebury winning followed by Rowley second and Nolan third just pipping out Preston.

B grade

Romano and Bryant made an early break both working hard together urged along by their heckler clan member(s) spectators.  After 10 mins Bryant was drawing away with Romano not quite able to hold. Bryant was caught with 5 mins to go.  Now there were two bunches with Downey leading the chase group work with Davis and Fawkes just hanging onto the rear. Terracini took out a good win with Scherl second and Downey third.

D grade

The bunch held together for most of the race. Chowns went to the front later in the race holding this position until 2 laps to go.  Thankfully Dgrade held their gap crossing the finish line just ahead of the fast finishing Bgrade leaders, with the bunches safely separated by about 100m.  Gunther with an impressive win followed by Moore second and Newhouse third.

I won’t mention the grade, but post race, there were was some corroborated feedback about a rider not holding their line and cutting across in the bunch finish sprint causing others to have to evade. This is reminder such riding is a No No!  The new SFP anti kangaroo fencing is a good thing, but a big boy made his way in but was fairly stuck in, taking a while to find his way out.  B and D grade did a good job avoiding.    Thank you to the setup crew Hutchings, x2 Fawkes and Milne for helping out marshalling.
