Sutton Driver Training Centre Race Report
A very cold morning gave way to some bright afternoon sunshine and a bunch of keen riders ready to take on the SDTC circuit.
C Grade
A solo breakaway from lap two, Julian Dohna looked strong with a 10 second lead on lap three. Dave Buckley and a few others worked hard to bring him back by the time they crossed the finish line again. Then after a lap of respite, Julian went on the attack again and this time it split the bunch well and truly in two. Four riders brought back Julian’s second attempt to create a group of five leaders. All five were together with one lap to go and then Ed put in a big final dig up the climb to break away and hold off a chasing Julian Dohna to take the win. Julian was second followed by Dave Buckley.
D Grade
All together for the first few laps. Nick Boylan put in a few solid digs off the front to create a bit of action, but it all stayed more or less together until the final lap. From the final turn onto the finish straight, Jonathan Chowns appeared first. Although, he was visibly slower approaching the finish line compared to the sprinting Alison Hale and Kevin Newhouse. It was a photo finish in the end with Jonathan Chowns coming in first followed by Alison Hale and Kevin Newhouse.
E Grade
Jonathan Chowns joined Ian Morton for a steady paced 30min session for the middle race. Jonathan was a glutton for punishment after already completing the D Grade race. Ian kept pace well to round out a solid hitout.
A Grade
A fast first few laps with Tristan Dimmock and Stuart Griffiths off the front. It then settled down with a steady pace. After another few laps it was Tristan and Dan Lekhac who went off the front, ahead of a chasing Michael Tolhurst followed by the remaining pack. Tristan and Dan then settled into a rhythm, maintaining a solid gap for the rest of the race. They battled it out in a final sprint to the line with Tristan taking the win ahead of Dan in second and Stuart winning the bunch sprint to take third.
B Grade
Split up a bit early on with a solid pace. It then settled with a big group trucking along down the front straight. The laps ticked down with a big pack still passing the finish line each lap. Then with 10mins to go a group of six riders took off to create a decisive break. These six fought it out for line honours with Matt Benedetti comfortably taking the win ahead of Nathan Spillane in second and Paul Scherl taking third in a photo finish from Dougal Robertson.
Many thanks to our volunteers Shirley-Anne Taylor, Ryan Fawke, Michael Fawke, Dan Smith, and Ian Hutchings.

Uriarra Homestead Handicap Saturday 20 June 1:30PM
***We still require a Race Director, Marshal, and an ETC to run this race. If you can help, please email committee@crmcc.org.au***
This will be a fast paced 3 laps of approximately 45km in total. Lower grades start first with a time advantage over faster grades who will be chasing. Work with your grade members to catch those bunches in front of you and stay away from those chasing you.
Please help our handicapper Rob Langridge by registering early so we can get a gauge of numbers and time gaps between grades.
Course starts at Uriarra Homestead, then uphill to the short turn before the climb, then downhill all the way to the top of Uriarra Crossing. Final stretch is back up the long drag to the Homestead. 3 laps in total.
Upcoming races needing volunteers
Please self-register as a volunteer, where you can put your name down against those roles marked ‘Vacant’ in this Google spreadsheet. We will follow-up and confirm your volunteering with an email from committee@crmcc.org.au
Thank you to those members who have offered their services to fill roles so our races can run.
