Race Report – Stromlo Mini-Tour
Owing to the fact there were not enough entrants or marshals to run the Tour in its original format, the programme was changed to be a 30-minute criterium followed by a hot lap or elimination race. The mini-tour was originally held in Bredalbane, and although it was held in spring, it was always conducted in unseasonably windy and cold weather. This version was the complete opposite, with almost tropical conditions by the second race. Many thanks to Robert Craine for marshalling and for Simon being present and not having to use his first aid skills.
Jason Irwin fired the first salvo in A grade, staying ahead of the bunch for a while and then was joined by Vice-President Parker. With 17 minutes left, this break was neutralised, then Steve Crispin had a few goes off the front. With a few minutes left, Jason attacked again, but then was caught by David by the bell and he was left dangling off the front until the rest of the bunch made their charge for the line on the back straight. In the dash to the finish, Stuart Griffiths took the honours, followed by Marc Vroomans and Brad Peppinck.
A and B grades opted for the hot lap, with Steve Crispin posting the best ride of 1:40. Apologies to Jason Irwin, as neither of the possible times for him of 60 seconds or 2 minutes seemed to reflect his ability.
Crit | Hot lap | Points | Place
Stuart Griffiths | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
Brad Peppinck | 3 | 3 | 6 | 2 |
Steve Crispin | 7 | 1 | 8 | 3 |
Marc Vroomans | 2 | 8 | 10 | 4 |
David Parker | 8 | 4 | 12 | 5 |
Jason Irwin | 6 | 7 | 13 | 6 |
Ben Carmody | 9 | 6 | 15 | 7 |
Ben McDuff | 10 | 5 | 15 | 8 |
Toby McLenaghan | 5 | x | 9 | |
Trisan Dimmock | 4 | x | 10 |
B grade rolled off the line and within seconds Ian ‘Presto’ Preston was back in the pits with a flat. The leniency of the race director was such that he rejoined the race in the latter half but hadn’t missed anything, as B grade were content to roll around in single file. Darren Blackhurst had lit up many crits last season will long breakaways but his attempt with five minutes to go was quickly nullified. At the bell, Craig Lindenmayer launched the perfect attack, holding on to win by a couple of lengths followed by Rosie Hurt and Greg Harris. Craig posted a 1:44 hot lap to take out both stages.
Crit | Hot lap | Points | Place
Craig Lindenmayer | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
Greg Harris | 3 | 2 | 5 | 2 |
Rosie Hurt | 2 | 4 | 6 | 3 |
Darren Blackhurst | 4 | 3 | 7 | 4 |
Ian Preston | 5 | 6 | 11 | 5 |
Mark Taylor | 6 | 5 | 11 | 6 |
Andrew Remely | 7 | 7 | 14 | 7 |
D&E. With only four starters, this race was always going to be a very polite affair, with all the riders opting for the last lap sprint to gain glory. Shirley-Anne Taylor, not being one to enjoy a slow race, did many laps on the front but when it came to the big show-down, Ian Morton was the fastest, with Elizabeth Lowe second and Ashley Sked third.
These guys opted for the elimination race. There was no rest for the wicked, so once the crit had finished they rolled into a very neutral lap. On the first dash to the line there was only about 30cm between first and fourth, but Ashley was the first ejected. On the next lap, Liz Lowe was found wanting. Then for the two-up show-down we thought Ian would have the legs to roll Shirley-Anne, but her grit and determination proved decisive, as when ‘sit-in’ Ian, moved to surge past, there was nothing in the Morton tank. Good one Shirley-Anne. Ian’s consistency helped him gain the title of Mini-Crit Tour champion.
Crit | Elimination | Points | Placing
Ian | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
Liz | 2 | 3 | 5 | 2 |
Shirley-Anne | 4 | 1 | 5 | 3 |
Ahley | 3 | 4 | 7 | 4 |

Female cyclists needed for research
The Mary MacKillop Insitute for Health Research is looking for female participants in an upcoming research project they have coined “Tour de Flow”, examining the influence of the menstrual cycle on performance.
The work is being led by internationally renowned Professor Louise Burke, along with PhD candidate Ella Smith (and former international local racer Vicki Whitelaw) amongst other.
It will be an online Australia-wide Zwift racing series across the month of November.
There is a real lack of research on female athletes and this project is a unique opportunity for women to be involved in research specifically focussed on them, which they are really excited about!
Please reach out to Ella Smith (Ella.Smith@acu.edu.au) if you would like to participate.
Also attached is the poster about the research.

Bleat compiler – Volunteer needed
You always wanted to Bleat – yes you can. CRMCC requires a Bleater – takes about an hour of your time on a Monday evening to compile the Bleat from the Bleat gmail.com account. Works best if you have a PC or equivalent and a couple of screens, Full training available. If you would like to volunteer please contact the Bleat for a tête-à-tête.

Racing Calendar changes – please see below
Subject to approvals from NSW and ACT governments, the dates have changed for the following events:
Sunday, October 15 | The 2023 Gunning (aka Peter McLennan Memorial) event. Start/Finish at Bredalbane, using the community hall as race central Consists of a TT event followed by the usual 48km lap – once or twice depending on your grade. The handicapper is considering letting D grade vote on their lap count… The single day approach facilitates (i) the ability to attract potential 2024 members though the use of the single day trial licence, and (ii) reduces event costs hiring NSW traffic controllers. |
The dates of the NSW and ACT AusCycling events were not available at the time the Calendar was submitted to the ACT government for approval in 2022.
